Upgrade failed with "Failed to execute GATHER"

    Hey all

Tearing my hair out with my 32bit W7 to W8 pro upgrade here.. . Setup gets to 24% and then bombs out with "Windows 8 installation has failed". The logs say..

Some of the things I have tried already:

    • SFC /scannow
    • Chkdsk C: /f /r
    • Deleted all volume shadow copies
    • Made sure VSS and all associated services are running
    • VSSADMIN says all the writers are working ok
    • No errors in the event log

I have also done a repair install of W7.

To think after all this time I may have well done a clean install.. but alas. I still would like to upgrade this system, I cant see why it wouldnt work.

However, I am completely stumped - the log files dont seem to give me enough information about what the issue actually is. Setup cant read the snapshot data, however VSSADMIN can read the data perfectly fine so am not sure what W8 is talking about

Just wondered if any experts on here might have any ideas?

Did you make the backup DVD?

You can make the ISO from exe.

    Check this post by BillWindows.

Upgraded, but changed my mind (want clean install, help!)

Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that. Make sure you feel comfortable doing this and have anything you need backed up, this worked for me, I hope it works for you.

If you need to redownload, go to your email from Windows Strore, download from the link.

Yes indeed I have the DVD backup. I'll use it if needs must, just thought I would see if there any more options that might be available to get this upgrade working first.

I thought Microsoft were going to make this easy!
