Windows 8 upgrade with Win 7 in dual boot ?

I have Win 7 installed on my main HDD.
If I purchase the 40$ Windows 8 upgrade, can I install Windows 8 on a separate partition of the same HDD while keeping the Win 7 partition available (and untouched) through a dual boot option?

If so, can I rely on the Windows 8 setup application to take care of installing the boot loader and adding the two OSes to the boot options? Or is it something that I have to take care myself with some third-party boot loader and custom installation steps?

In other words, I want to end up with a dual boot setup made of Win 7 and a new, freshly installed, Windows 8 setup. Is it something that I can do with the "upgrade" Windows 8 license?

Thanks,

Ozo.

NO you can't it's against the license, if you upgrade from Windows 7, you don't have the right to use Windows 7 anymore, in dual boot or another PC

Why wouldn't it be original software? It upgrades fine, if they were so bothered they'd have prevented it from being possible!

Hello golferdude, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes. If you uninstall the upgrade Windows 8 Pro copy, then you can use the Windows 7 if you like. You just can't have both installed at the same time as per the EULA. It's either or. That's how we can get an upgrade copy at a cheaper price than a full (system builders) copy. :)

So Brink, what you're saying is that I have to take a chance on destroying my original Windows 7 setup, by going over the top, or wilfully destroying it by putting Windows 8 on another partition, am I getting this correct.

You can use the Windows 8 System Builder to install Windows 8 in a the dual boot partition. At the moment its $80 on Amazon. (It was $70 a couple of days ago)

However, if you install XP, Vista or Win7 on the second partition first, then the upgrade version will work.

A dual-boot setup does NOT allow using the two OS licenses simultaneously. When you select Win 8 from the boot loader menu, Win 7 is effectively being instantaneously uninstalled so that you can install and boot Win 8. And if you choose to boot Win 7, it's now Win 8 that's being uninstalled to recover the Win 7 backup. I hardly see how this would violate the licensing terms, presuming the license allows for keeping a backup installation of your old Win 7 OS.

But besides the licensing terms, ... can someone confirm whether a dual boot installation can be done with the Win 8 upgrade installation DVD? In other words, would the installation software support installing Win 8 on a different (previously created) HDD partition *and* would it install a boot loader with the two OSes options to boot from?

Thanks,

Ozo.

Works for me. Some earlier version of Windows needs to be installed on the partition where you want to upgrade. Its not clear if that installed OS needs to have been authenticated. Of course you will be doing a clean install on that partition.

I recommend using EasyBCD to make sure you have full control over your boot loader.

Thanks Brink... What if I have another XP license and install it on the "Windows 8" partition and have it dual booting windows 7 and xp (after uninstalling Windows 8 and formatting the partition) then do an upgrade on the xp partition? Will it upgrade the xp or the windows 7? Just trying to figure out how to have both windows 7 and windows 8 running with all of the various licenses I have.

Thanks...

I can tell you right now with 100% certainty that you will be violating the EULA if you leave Windows 7 installed if you purchased an upgrade copy of Windows 8 with that Windows 7 as your qualifying OS for the upgrade. Yes, that means that you cannot have it installed as a dual boot either since Windows 7 is still installed.

The reduced price of the upgrade copy is given just for that reason. When you purchase the upgrade you are agreeing to uninstall the qualifying OS (Windows 7 in this case) in exchange for the discounted price.

If you wish to keep both Windows 7 and Windows 8, then you must purchase a system builders (full) copy of Windows 8 that allows you to do so as per it's EULA.

Yes, you can download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for your PC running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3) for an estimated retail price (ERP) of $39.99.

So what is the process to remove windows 8 and have windows 7 become my boot os again? Is it just changing the drive letter of windows 8 to something else and changing my windows 7 back to C? Thanks for any help...

I'm confused, are you guys saying it's not allowed or not possible? Because I bought the $40 upgrade last night, created the usb flash drive installer option, and installed it on a new partition and have been dual booting back and forth between windows 7 and 8 all day with no problems. I set up the dual boot to keep my wife from losing it on me for forcing her to learn the new UI so fast, so it's a temporary measure but it works no problem. I used the dual boot tutorial on this Site.

It's not allowed as per the EULA if you upgraded to Windows 8.
