Can't continue installation due to daemon tools

When I get to the "What needs your attention" screen during installation, Windows is asking me to manually uninstall Daemon Tools due to incompatibility. I have uninstalled the program and attempted to clean out any stray files or registry entries, but the installer still lists it as a problem and I can't continue the installation.

I have reinstalled Daemon Tools and uninstalled it again but this has not helped.

Any advice?

Have you tried rebooting after uninstalling that might help, I'd burn a bootup DVD from the download files before doing anything again if you haven't already.

I've rebooted a few times. I have a purchased DVD copy of Windows 8 Pro, if that's what you meant by download files.

I suppose you don't want to do a clean install or a dual boot, that would be my recommendation if possible. I don't like going over the top of an old system personally, because of the problems like you're now facing.

Have you tried a registry cleaner, that might help.

I normally would agree, but it's a fairly fresh install of Windows 7 and I have several programs I would need to add back, some of which were difficult enough to run with 7. So I'm trying to avoid a clean install if possible. This is the only conflict Windows is reporting. I used CCleaner as well as manually deleting entries I found in the registry.

The only other thing I can think of is a system restore to before Daemon tools was installed, but that's only if it was the last programme installed, and sometimes you can lose a bit of stuff with that as well. Otherwise a dual boot would be the best option, other than that I don't know.

I didn't have enough restore points to go back prior to the install. I've since deleted all restore points anyway, thinking something might have been cached. I'd rather a clean install than a dual boot setup so maybe I'm heading in that direction. I would just really like to know first of all, why windows thinks I still have Daemon tools installed? And if it found some left over files, why can't it just tell me where they are? Or simply allow me to skip the compatibility check and install Windows 8 with the understanding that one of my programs may not work.

I understand that Windows 8 has native mounting software of it's own, so maybe there's a conflict there?

Anyway thanks for your help.
