Yes, it checks the previous installation but after "Refresh your PC" "traces" of previous installation are appeared and Win 8 is activated. Update Advisor does not check from were these "traces" came...

I hate that upgrade advisor, it's too simplified.
Have to be able to choose btwn x64 and x86 downloads, at least it should inform the user of the version that is being downloaded.

Yeah, it's pretty light on information and options. I just bought an upgrade and am in the process of downloading. At least I believe that's what's occurring as it's just given me a percentage and ETA. It doesn't say exactly what it's downloading.

A simple 'downloading x64' would suffice.

    Lol i know.

Anyway the word is soon there will a fixed version of Upgrade Advisor which will let the user choose between x64 and x86 version.
Either that or there are going to be links to download x64 and x86 iso separately.

So, from what I could gather from this thread, it is possible to upgrade from the Windows 8 release preview.
I just need to get the upgrade key from a Windows 7/XP/Vista, burn the ISO, and install it on the Release Preview.

My question is, since the upgrade advisor collects info on your system, won't the Windows 7 product key be invalidated in the process?

I would think that it should be...but I don't have an upgrade copy to test with..so I don't know in actuality how it works or what it does.

Really wish the upgrade copy would be on MSDN or Technet. Then I could actually test this stuff and know ahead of time. I'm not planning to buy Windows 8 as of now, so I'll be in the dark on the actual process.,

Also, I want the PT-PT version of Win 8 Pro. Will the upgrade from the release preview install the PT version (since that's the key I'm getting)?

I would imagine that it does, it must be specified on the downloaded ISO.

What I did was purchase the upgrade after the upgrade advisor checked my installation of Win 7 64 bit. After the purchase was complete, I created a USB installation media and then used that to do a custom(clean) install on a Dell laptop with a evaluation copy of Win 8 already installed on a new HDD. The install was flawless and automatically activated.

My Win 7 system remains activated.

Nice. Thanks Dlcampbe. Thanks to you, I'm going to take the leap. MS should be thankful to users like you, too. I wouldn't buy Windows 8 if I couldn't retain my 7.

you really should purchase the full release of the product and not the upgrade then. You aren't supposed to keep using Windows 7 after you upgrade it.
