Upgrade from 90 day eval?

  1. #1

The Windows 8 upgrade assistant isn't letting me upgrade. The message is:

Sorry, Windows 8 isn't available for online purchase in the country/ region you're in.

I'm running the 90 day Enterprise eval. Is that the problem?

Some OP’s are having problems with ZIP CODE’s.

You CANNOT upgrade from the Enterprise eval version. You absolutely have to start over with a clean load, Microsoft was pretty clear about this.

I had the same problem. I couldn't complete the Upgrade Assistant process from a PC with the Win 8 Enterprise evaluation version installed. I got the same message. I was pretty sure that the downloaded copy was available in my country (the USA).

I went through the Upgrade Assistant process from a Win 7 machine, but stopped the final download. The email confirmation of the purchase included a link to a downloaded set-up utility (approx. 5MB). I was able to download and run that on the Win 8 Enterprise machine, ending up with the .iso. At no time was I offered a choice between the X86 and X64 versions; I started from a Win 7 X64 machine, so I suppose that I got X64 (as I wanted).

I haven't had time to go further. I hope that I won't have to re-install Win 7 to run the upgrade, but as far as I know, it will be required. (No hacks published for that yet, unfortunately.)

    An update:

The Win8 Pro Upgrade version installed over the Win8 Enterprise evaluation version without a hitch. The new Windows installation is activated.

Interestingly enough, while I used the installer to delete the HD partitions and reformat, the browser favorites and some other information was transferred to the new installation.

I was pleased to not install Win7.

So I assume you weren't given an option to keep your existing apps? I am expecting to do a mandatory clean install.

    Let me know...

Edit: downloading now on my Windows 7/64 PC...

The option was present, but I didn't try it.

Ok, when the download is finished, where is the ISO file located?

Where you specify. I don't recall the default.

There is none you have to create it from the downloaded files. Start the upgrade assistant, it comes up with three options, choose, nothing, the next screen comes up with three more options, choose install by creating media, which will give you the option to create an ISO file. Once you have created that do a right click on it and create your DVD.

Make sure to keep your key as well.
