Yeah look, I installed it on a computer this morning with no previous Windows version on it and it worked. When I say no previous version I mean I had the release preview on it. I started to install over the top of it but then took the option to format the HDD and it worked, I just put the key in that came with the download.
As far as I can tell everything works and its updating so go figure. I did install it with a Live Account though so maybe that had something to do with it, don't know.

Ok great! Is it possible to also save it as an iso for later install?

Yes you can, when you download it, it asks you if you want to install now, later or do nothing, just tick do nothing. Just follow the prompts after that and it gives you the option to create an ISO out of the downloaded files and burn it to a DVD. Its a bit confusing, I warned Microsoft this morning, I told them to put something on their website, not sure if they did or not.

Did you get a new key for windows 8 or did you have to use a key from your previous windows version?

You get a new key and use that, hope it all works for you, like I said it did for me.

I'm with Bill on this. I actually just installed on a new computer I built that had Windows 7 installed but no key (30 day grace period) and it installed without a hitch. I reformatted my HD as well. I just hope I don't start getting black screened and have to go back and install a previous valid version of windows, then reinstall windows 8. I just don't get it, technically my install isn't valid according to MS. It says right on the upgrade page, "To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7." I was expecting it to ask me for a valid Key from a previous version of windows, but it never did... When I go into system in Win 8 it says my version of windows is authentic.

So you dont to 'waste' your old key to do the upgrade? Do I need to format Win 7 and reinstall Vista before upgrading if I want to be able to keep my windows 7 key?

You say you had nothing installed on the hard drive, but then say that you had the release preview and just chose a clean install. Not surprising that worked as it is well documented.

Has you bought a new blank hard drive and just tried to use it with nothing on it at all, is a very different thing. From what I have read, this is possible too.

Just what difference is there in either version except with the upgrade you either have to have a previous version installed or the disks available. I assume you have a choice for doing a clean install with the upgrade if you desire or saving your current files etc.
