Hi, I just installed windows 8 upgrade and selected not to keep anything. The installation went fine but for some reason I only have 38gb when my hard drive is 250gb. How come my previous installation of vista didn't get deleted? how do I fix this to get my hard drive space back?

Thanks.

I did the same thing but decided to format the HDD for a nice clean install, and it worked.

Thanks for that. But wouldn't it be easier if I manually deleted it? Like clicking on the Windows.old folder and just deleting it. Or will that cause problems with the OS?

Thanks

No just go ahead and delete the old folder, I was just saying what I did, I was pretty sure I was going to end up with a folder so I formatted.

Ok I'm lost lol, So when I clicked on not to keep anything during Windows 8's installation doesn't that mean it should have formatted the hard drive? Does that mean I installed Windows 8 over Vista so it wasn't really a clean install?

Sorry for the stupid questions I'm a noob at this.

Also in the deleting options of cleanmgr it gives me the option to delete Windows temporary installation files which is about 4gb, is it safe to delete that too?

No it didn't format the HDD just rounded up your files and installed around them, so technically it wasn't a clean install. Me personally I prefer the clean install, that's why I told you about it, but its up to you.

You can always install again cleanly it doesn't take too long anyway as long as you don't mind doing it. Just make sure you have the ISO files on a DVD so you can reinstall.

You should have about 230G left after a clean install, Windows 8 only takes up around 20G. Just make sure you feel comfortable with what you are doing and save and backup any files you need before going ahead.

Thanks for the info,
I made an ISO out of the upgrade that I downloaded today, so how would I do a clean install? because it didn't give me the option before.

That's strange, I didn't get the option to do a clean install, just "Keep nothing", so I have done an upgrade install and not the custom install :(

To do a clean install you have to format your HDD in options while installing, please only do these things if you have full confidence in your ability to do so, and backup anything you might need. Also you need to keep your key handy while doing a clean install.
