    Help dual booting Windows 8

    I've been following this guide:
Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista

The problem is that when I go to install Windows 8 it doesn't recognize the partition I made. This is the partition I made.

This is what it looks like when I go to install Windows 8 on that partition.

Neither of the 2 partitions I made appear on that list. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. I would really like to try this out before I decide that I want to purchase it.

Hello ScoobyDoo, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The 39.06 GB unallocated space on Disk 0 doesn't show up since you already have the max of 4 primary partition on the disk. You could use METHOD TWO in the tutorial below to create a logical partition with the unallocated space instead that should show up afterwards.

I'm not sure what the unallocated space on Disk 1 is not showing up though. Creating a new simple volume with the unallocated space to format it should have it show up afterwards.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

That is a little over my head. I'm not super tech savvy. Do you think it would be possible to use a flash drive for the time being to put Win8 on? Then if I do like I'll just wipe my hard drive and put Win8 on that when it releases.

    Sorry, but no.

You could also install a 2nd HDD/SSD in your computer to install Windows 8 on.

Alright, thanks for your help. If I attempt to follow that guide I'll just screw everything up. Ha ha. I'll just figure out how to make recovery discs for Win7 and just install Win8 over it.

What brand and model is your computer? I'll be happy to see if I can find instructions on how to create a set of factory recovery discs.

I would make the win7 partition system and delete the 100mb thing.

Then you can install win8 to the space you made.

Actually, not like the tutorial in this case.

Give the system partition drive letter S. Then open an elevated cmd and type
    bcdedit /export c:\sbcd
    diskpart
    sel vol c
    act
    sel vol S
    inact
    exi
    bcdboot c:\windows /s c:

    Close cmd prompt.

    Reboot back into win7.

Open an elevated cmd again, type:

    bcdedit /import c:\sbcd
    bcdboot c:\windows

Now you can just rt click 100mb thing in diskpart and delete.

If HP have set it up the way they should have - you will still be able to access their recovery options.

As Shawn says, you definitely need to make the manufacturer recov discs, if you haven't already - you never know if/when you may need them.
