    Terminal Install Mania

Good morning. I've seen my share of adversity but this is un-real. I've been trying to install a clean version of
Win 8 CP onto my Dell Optiplex GX260 with a P4 2.4Ghz CPU and 768 Mbs of RAM . I've long since realized that the only way to success is by going thru the setup.exe in the Sources folder to bypass Error Checking. Even so, every time I reach the 27% mark of Getting Files ready ..... my Install crashes at the First Restart with that typical greyed out screen. I'm thinking that this is a Video Graphics glitch related to the Intel Extreme Graphics driver and inboard Intel 82845 processor. I've read that a few peeps have claimed that they were able to install 8 onto a Dell Optiplex GX260 and, I just don't see it happenin' . I'm an adequate Tech and I think ytou'll need an IT Tech at this point. I would think that this is a logistical impossibility. If there are any Admins or Moderators with Awareness on the issue, please reply so that I will have a fighting chance. Goodday.

That may be, given that machine was originally designed/logo'd for Windows 2000. What are the specifics of the chipset, video, and processor? There are certain P4 CPUs that don't work under Windows 8 as well, so knowing that will help too.

Hi, and thanx for timely feedback. When MSFT says that it'll run Win7 then it will run Win8, I'm gonna take them on their word. The CPU is a P4 that's SL6RZ that's doing 2.4Ghz and 512 Mbs of Cache and 533 Mhz of FSB speed. It will NOT support NX . The Display Adapter is an Intel 82845 G/GL/GV graphics controller using an Intel Extreme Graphics driver that I need to use the Compatibility Tab
on Win7 to work. I'm becoming obsessed with getting W8 to pony up and Install without glitches. With your help, maybe this will become reality. Thanks again!

If the CPU doesn't support NX, you can stop there. Win8 requires NX support to function properly as of the Release Preview. P4s from the Prescott line were the first to have NX support, and you have an older Northwood P4.

Agree with Cluberti - No NX, no win8 CP, RTM or final release....

Gentlemen: I'm only gonna say this once - don't bet money on this subject because you'd be taking a drop somewhere down the road. I've gotten CP and RP to run like a Track Star even with a Pentium 4 that doesn't support NX . An indisputable fact of God and, if you were local to Phila PA I would give you odds. My goodness, maybe it's time to step up and become a Moderator. You simply create a bootable USB stick and run the setup.exe from the Sources folder. Runs like Carl Lewis usewd to at the Olympics! Only trick is to find Compatibility for the Intel 82845G/GL/GV Graphics Controller. The PCA won't work. But, just like the other, I WILL find a way to drive it. Goodday.

Well, that's great, but your installation would be unsupported and might do some odd things when it goes to do DEP but can't, because the CPU doesn't support it. If you're really wanting to get Windows 8 on some seriously old hardware, however, more power to you . You could simply run imagex from a WinPE environment and drop the WIM file down on disk, too, if you just wanted to avoid the hardware checks. However, these hardware checks aren't there to force you to buy new hardware, they're there because the OS requires those features to run properly.

Anyway, the 82845G/L/V chipset has no Windows 7 drivers and thus no WDDM drivers, meaning you won't get the video chipset to work on Windows 8 other than perhaps the generic "Microsoft Base Video device" driver. There will be no acceleration, and you might get a lower resolution than your monitor/screen supports, but it might work.

The drivers for that chipset are XPDM driver model drivers - these will actually work on Windows 7 (as it still has limited support for the XPDM driver model, in compatibility mode), but Windows 8 no longer includes any XPDM compatibility, and thus XP drivers no longer work. You must have at least WDDM 1.0 (Vista) display drivers to get full functionality from your video chipset, and WDDM 1.1 (Win7) or 1.2 (Win8) are preferred for performance reasons.

Yes, Sir - I enjoy Testing new OS's just to see how far I can extend the envelope of the hardware and technology in front of me. I think that I've stretched the rubber band about as far as it will possibly go with respect to the Dell SFF I've got here. I take pride
in this GX260 - this Desktop has the look and doesn't have a scratch on it. Both stickers in upper left corner are still firmly in place.Added a Slimtype Combo DVD burner and take it from there. Fully functional and hasn't cost a penny. But, I will need an
AGP Video card to pony up resolution that my 82845 G/GL/GV will no longer provide. Simply no way to drive that chip on board. The Basic Adapter will do 1024 by 786 and gives me Metro but, like you say, no acceleration. Close but no stogie. Thanx for your input - I"m sure you know your IT because of what you said about the SL6RZ being a Northwood. Learned all about that boy trying to enable HyperThreading a while ago. Just missed the boat on that one also. Can get one on Ebay for around 10-15 bucks but is talk for another time. Thanx again, I like this site and I'll be back soon.
