    Upgrade 7 32 bit to 8 64 bit

Is it possible to upgrade from Windows 7 32 bit to Windows 8 64 bit?

Hello Canuck, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sorry, but no. You can do an in-place upgrade from 32-bit to 32-bit or 64-bit to 64-bit. Going from 32-bit to 64-bit would require a clean install instead.

    Clean Install - Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    There's a language difficulty here.

It is not possible to do an upgrade-in-place from any 32 bit version of Windows to a 64 bit one. An upgrade-in-place preserves most settings and installed programs.

However, a 32 bit version may qualify for the use of an upgrade license, which would have to be used to perform a clean install. Win 8 offers an option that's new, compared to older OSes: it can keep user files, even if everything else is eliminated. Whether that would apply here, I don't know.

Thanks guys, I figured it was a non starter. How about if I do a dual boot install 7 32 bit & 8? Can the 8 dual boot be 64 bit? It would be a clean install on a dedicated partition.

Yes, assuming your hardware is capable of running a 64bit OS.

That's great thanks. Now can you help with this one? I have downloaded 8RP and 7 USB Download Tool. When I try to create a bootable thumb drive using this program and the downloaded 8RP it tells me that this is not a "Valid ISO file". Any suggestions please?

    Canuck,

Your downloaded ISO may have been corrupted during download, or is a bad copy. If you used any type of download manager other than the default one in IE9 or Firefox, then that could also be the issue.

You'll most likely need to download a new copy, and try again.

Thank you Brink, I'm in the process of downloading it again thinking that may be the problem. I use the Firefox default download manager which normally does not give me any problems. At 155 KB/sec it's going to take hours so I off to bed while it downloads.

Thanks to all you guys for your support, knowing this knowledge base is available is very comforting.

It didn't, I downloaded from your link overnight, tried to install on a thumb drive this morning and got the same result "Not a valid ISO file" This time I downloaded the 64 bit version so I know it's a different file???
