Is upgrading from a not installed license possible?

I have windows 7 Pro retail, and Windows Vista Ultimate OEM, and am using Win 7 currently (obviously).

I wasnt interested in getting Windows 8 at first because windows 7 is perfect, and I didnt want to repeat the same mistake of XP > Vista.

But I just found out that I can upgrade my Vista license to Win 8 for just £24.99 which convinced me to get Win 8.

The problem is, will I need to reinstall Vista first to upgrade that license to Win 8?

No you shouldn't have to. It should upgrade overtop of your existing OS. During the process you have the option to upgrade or clean install...although in windows 8 calls it something else. If it were me I would definitely upgrade the Vista PC.

But if I install windows 8 upgrade over a Win 7 installation, wont it automatically upgrade that key instead of my Vista one?

Both my copies of Vista and Win 7 were for the same PC, Vista is now completely unused but I would prefer to upgrade the Vista key and not my Win 7 retail key.

Got it...yes it would upgrade the key for which ever version you have. And if you were wanting to upgrade vista you would have to reinstall vista and then upgrade. A pain really...but no other way around it that I can tell.

Ok so since the download is available now, can anyone confirm how this would work?

If I save it to media to upgrade later (got a spare 4 GB SD card to use), can I reinstall Vista first and then upgrade, or do I need to just reinstall Vista before downloading?

You can make ISO from the dpwnload.

You should have an upgrade file on your desktop, click on that, it asks some questions and one of them is do you want to install later say yes, then another question do you want to create an ISO file just say yes, when it has created the ISO file, right click on it to burn it to a DVD.
Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that. Make sure you feel comfortable doing this and have anything you need backed up, this worked for me, I hope it works for you.

Right, and if I simply format Win 7 and install straight from the ISO, I dont need to reinstall Vista first and I dont waste my Win 7 key?

Can the ISO be burned onto and installed from a 4 Gb USB drive?
