Black Screen of (ATI-Driver) Death

Hi,

I have a problem with my graphics driver.

I have two display adapters in my laptop (HP TM2-1090eg), an integrated Intel adapter and a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550.

I am currently running on this (terribly old) driver:
CurrentDriver.PNG

Today, I tried to update to the new "legacy" 12.6 driver (amd_catalyst_12.6_legacy_win8.exe). It allowed me to install the Display-Driver-Update, which gave me a totally black screen.

I connected to my laptop via RDP and opened the Device Manager, which gave me this warning on my ATI adapter:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I tried disabling the adapter (which normally switches me to the Intel adapter), which didn't have any effect. I was able to roll back the driver using the device manager (which made the RDP'ed screen flicker a few times), and after disabling and re-enabling the card again, I finally got back my laptop's screen.

I already had a similar problem with the preview-versions of Windows 8, which I wasn't able to resolve.
But since I'm running the RTM now and am using official ATI drivers intended for Windows 8, that probably shouldn't happen.

Is there any way I can install the newest available display driver without losing my screen?

Thanks for your help,
Felix Freiberger

I did not find a fix.
By using old versions and upgrading, I am now in a usable state, but I don't have the latest drivers installed.

Unluckily, I don't know exactly how I got there, but according to Device Manager, I am currently on the ATI Driver 8.672.4.0 from 25.11.2009 for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550.
I have Catalyst Control Center installed, but it doesn't open.

Try installing the original HP driver in compatibility mode. Create a system restore point. Try updating your drivers, if you get to the black screen of death, do a system restore from the recovery partition or by connecting to your laptop via RDP.

If you are able to get to a newer driver than I have without loosing your display, please tell me how you did it :)

Oh, sorry to hear that. I somehow got to my driver version, but I really don't remember how.
If you have a backup + system restore point, you could try uninstalling (with the "delete driver" box checked) the driver Windows 8 brought with it, and manually install the original HP one?

OK, thank you for that information. I don't have any exclamation mark, just this terribly outdated driver.

From what I read at the AMD site, the latest version of their driver that will work in Win8 with the HD 2x/3x/4x series cards is 12.6.

Don't know if that install hack with work with newer versions of the drivers -- but I suspect it will not.
