Video card issue

I was on my computer last night and all was fine. When I woke up this morning, my screen resolution had changed to a super low res, (I don't remember how low) and now Windows 8 lists my video card as a Microsoft Display Basic Driver. It is actually an Asus card with 1 GB of ram but windows shows it only has 256mb. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi Titan.

Seems like you card misses its driver.
First thing you can try is reinstall the driver (latest one if available, try to get from ASUS download site)
But few question here. Did you do anything last night? Like updating, changing setting, connecting dual monitor, got powerline failure.? Or any event during running.
There is a routine I use to do, every few months I take out the Video card, clean it with dry clothe, and re-seating it firmly to the PCI-e slot.

Kevin,
I did not do anything that night before I went to bed. I reinstalled the card, a 1GB Asus, and even put another card in (512mb MSI) and win8 reads both of them as 256mb. Whatever is going on also has slow the speed of my machine somehow. Could it be my motherboard? Even without drivers wouldn't Windows be able to tell that the cards are 1bg and 512mb?

I thought you already solved the issue.
Did you reinstall the driver? What ASUS series and MSI card series you installed?

Since it became problem, I think you might have to do it one by one to rule it out.
There are many causes can be suspected such as the card getting defected, dirty slot, deficient power from PSU, incompatibility (rare), and some more.
Windows 8 do read any card installed but not always to its detail and use common simple driver available from MS. The memory size other than Intel based video card not always accurately detected. I find it happens when worked with ATI/AMD or Nvidia card. I did have problem with ATI in which after successful installation and restart the resolution suddenly drop to 800x600.
Windows 8 on my experience has issue with latest driver of ATI/AMD except we the latest ATI card.
Here the list I used to do in solving it:
Additionally you can follow this thread made by our senior member here AMD Catalyst™ Drivers Windows® 8 Consumer Preview by Righteous Dude

If your ASUS is Nvidia then try to do the the same way with different driver.

Hope that helps you a little
