PC won't boot after failed graphics driver update

Hi all.

I have an ASUS M-11 tower and I recently had it's Intel HD Graphics (4400) konk out on me. The HDMI output stopped working rendering my tower useless for watching HD movies on.

I tried using an Intel driver updating app but apparently it didn't work. After a reboot I get a solid red screen, with no text on it, and no way to interact with it. I can't login or do anything. The only thing that happens is the screen changes from red to blue if I tap ESC, that is it.

So I accessed the recovery options by pressing F9 at bootup. I chose the Reset PC option. It went thru the process, but after completing and its auto reboot, I just get a blank black screen now with no way to interact. No logos, no updating icons nothing to indicate more stuff is going on like setting up files. If I reboot from this screen, it just reboots the PC and loops back to the same blank black screen.

I tried leaving it for over 20 minutes on the black screen thinking maybe it's just doing stuff in the background, but nothing comes of it.

I am not sure what to do from here. I don't have a recovery USB or disc.

Anyone have another suggestion ?

I realized after posting this it should have maybe been under another category, but I managed to get a full factory reset after using the full wipe option rather than the normal reset option from recovery menu (F9 at boot).

This time I will be setting up recovery disk, password rest disk, system image etc. Normally I do on all PC's but got lazy and paid for it.

You might try to boot into Safe Mode, see:

This will boot using Microsoft's default VGA driver. From there you should be able to reset your video card's driver and give you a way to fix the actual problem with your video card's driver.

I tried all the Safe Mode options but ran into a wall. Can't remember off the top of my head what it was, but just remembered I couldn't get it to work.

I actually got it going again with the full reset. Shortly after that, I was informed about the free Win 10 update and took that. In the meantime I purchased another ASUS desktop (M-32 series) w/ Windows 10 as I wasn't sure I could recover it.


What really gets me is I purchased this brand new tower, and low and behold, the monitor goes black if I turn off the screen and can't get it to show the desktop without a reboot.

Since I went to Win 8.1 and now Win 10, it's been graphics card/driver issues non stop. My Win 7 pro laptop still works great at least.

I also had update issues with the 8.1 tower. Literally not a single update would take. At the end I had over 200 updates waiting to bepurchaesedtowerould try and shutdown the PC and have it install the updated, but an hour later it reverts all the changes.

So long story short, I am going to try Win 10 on the originally 8.1 tower and see if all the issues are resolved.

PS this new 10 tower I just purchased has system images, restore points, system repair disc and password reset disc and so will the upgraded 8.1 tower. Not going thru that again

If you are having that much problems with it, you might consider sending it back. There should be some warranty, if not due to its age, you might have to replace the video card as it may have gotten fried somehow (maybe a powersurge).

If it is a driver problem, you prolly should go on the forum for your particular video card and ask around if anyone else has had this issue. A PITA, sure, but unless you have another video card lying around which you can replace it with as a test, I don't see any other option.
