Second display not working

I purchased a second hand monitor to use with my laptop. It's a bit old so I had to get an HDMI to VGA cable. The monitor is definitely powered since when it's unplugged the display comes on telling me there is "no signal" etc and the light on the power button is on, but my laptop can't seem to detect that the monitor is plugged in, and there seems to be no way of getting my desktop to display on it. Screenshot resolution shows only one screen and pressing "detect" does nothing.

I've had a google around but found nothing that was really relevant to my hardware or my problem. Please help me!

Have you tried the monitor on another PC to confirm it works?

Also, there is generally a key with a monitor symbol on it on a laptop, and pressing some kind of other special key and that key will switch the display from the laptop screen to the monitor. On my laptop, for example, the top row of keys all have special symbols printed in yellow. There is a Function key that is also printed in yellow. Top get one of those functions to work, I press the function key and the key with the symbol at the same time. I don't have the laptop with me, but I seem to remember the monitor symbol key was F8.
