Best video connector format?

Hi All, I have t buy a video adapter for a new monitor. The Surface Pro has a mini-DVI and the monitor has full DVI, HDMI and VGA in-ports.

I am currently using an old DVI-VGA adapter and it is working fine at the monitor's recommended resolution, 1920x1080. But, if I can get a visually better display, then I will buy an adapter.

So, the question is NOT about specs but actual eye-ball stuff.

Am I going to see anything improve by going to a Mini-DVI/HDMI adapter or direct Mini-DVI/DVI cable? I mean the current VGA adapter is looking pretty damned fine to me, but if the display can be better then I will go for it. BUT, I must stay at the 1920x1080 to match the old monitor side by side.

I've tried swapping adapters and cables on a flat panel that has both DVI and VGA adapters and didn't see any difference in resolution or clarity. VGA often lets you resize and move the screen around while DVI tends to prevent that, but if the display screen is full sized and centered, there's liable to be no gain from switching cables or adapters.

Keeping the signal digital front start to finish should provide the best picture but it's up to the individual to pick up on the differences. I would personally ditch anything vga but that is only my opinion. With places like monoprice around i see no financial issue either. There will be no difference between hdmi or dvi so the end that plugs in to the tv is up to what you prefer size-wise i guess

Edit- forgot to mention that hdmi will be limited to 1080p whereas dvi should scale up in case of future upgrades
