Solved Monitor cable

Because I get an intermittent ,"auto adjust in progress," I am looking for a new cable. It occurs when logging in.
I have updated my NVidia card, checked the cables and monitor settings and set it to factory settings.
I changed 60 to 75. All my drivers are updated except the monitor which is PnP and I don't see any updates from Dell for a 9 year old device.
I see quite a bit about this issue on the web with E196FP Dell but it only surfaced very late 8.1 [just before updating] into Windows 10.

I can correct this by unplugging ac then plugging it in again - it lasts a bit of time then returns.

I have Win 10 pro on a dell XPS 8300 x 64. The monitor is 9 years and the pc is 4 1/2. Maybe age and Win 10 are an issue.

*Question; Every cable I see has 5 pins on one end but a different number on the other. My VGA cable has 5 male pins on each end.

Does this mean I need an adapter to match the ports or receptacles on both monitor and pc or do you think there is another issue? I have no other cables etc. to test.

It is your monitor, not cables or the OS that is the issue. Normally the Inverter or lamp starts dying around that age.

You can get a decent refurbished for around $60 on newegg.com. I just got a HP L1955 for $54 & speakers that attach to it for $19.

I do not know anything about hardware. I have a Dell E196FP with 15 pins on each end.
How do I find a monitor that will have 15 pins to fit my pc?
Are there any other considerations. I do no gaming - just normal pc things.
My screen is about18 inches.
I went to Newegg and there were a lot of them but did not know what I was looking for like DVI VGA etc.
I guess I currently have a VGA.
Any help would be really great.

Unless the cable has been physically abused and damaged - crushed, chewed, smashed, or stretched - it is highly unlikely it is bad. They don't just go bad.

This may be normal. Does it settle into the correct resolution once it is finally booted? Understand when a computer boots, the graphics signal and resolutions change several times as the boot process (handshaking between monitor and card) works its way through the BIOS, Windows native drivers, then finally when the graphics card drivers are loaded. It is not uncommon for the monitor to switch back and forth between analog and digital, and a couple resolutions until Windows boots completely. This is not a problem, unless you are seeing this well after it has completely booted.

At this point, we cannot tell if it is the monitor. It could be, but it could also be the graphics solution so the first thing I would do (besides making sure cables are securely fastened) is to swap monitors and see what happens. If the second monitor does the same thing, you know it is in the computer. If the second monitor works, you know it was the first monitor.

This does NOT have anything to do with the inverter or CCFL (cold-cathode florescent lamp). When an inverter or CCFL fail, the display simply goes dim and you would not be able to see any "auto-adjust in progress" message (at least not without shining a flashlight into the screen).

You sure it is 5 pins? Is your card or the monitor labeled?

According to this, your monitor has a standard 15-Pin D-sub (VGA) connector.

What video card do you have?

I have the Dell E196FP I posted before and made a big error for which I apologize. It is a 15 pin that goes into both ends.
I have Win 10 pro, have installed the latest NVidia driver and the "auto adjust in progress" comes up with every boot, or login from sleep. It persists and does not go away except at times if unplug the ac, then for a brief time it is ok. It starts up again after a day or two.
I have no one to exchange parts with, that is the trouble. I don't want to buy something and have the same problem that is why I have been digging so deeply.

If you don't have a another monitor, note that most modern TVs support computer input too.

I am unsure what this leads to and how to but I am now believing the monitor is failing after 9 years. I am lucky it lasted that long.
I will use it for a while as the interference is only at log in.

So when you boot, how long does this problem last? And does it happen after Windows has fully loaded up to your desktop?

Most modern TVs have inputs for multiple "sources" including TV cable , DVD players, VCR and Computer.

What I meant was that when I login or boot, the problem occurs for a moment then goes away so I can use the machine fine. If I awake it or boot up, it occurs again briefly.
If I unplug ac and plug it back it sometimes stops this problem briefly. I hope this clarifies the issue. I am going to keep it until it worsens then replace it.

And as I said earlier, that sounds like normal behavior to me. When I boot my computer, my monitors go on and off several times as they handshake, determine they are using DVI digital inputs and settle on a hi-rez resolution instead of default VGA.

I guess it is ok then. I had opened this thread because it had not done that for the last 6 or 7 years until the last few weeks with 8.1 and with 10.

Well, sorry, but you can't live with me!

If it never did it before, it is worth keeping an eye on and if it get worse, keep an eye out for sales on new monitors. But as long as it works fine after the system boots, I would not worry too much about it.

It is getting to be about that time. I should get a monitor that has VGA to run with this pc, but probably not HDMI which my TV has but we don't involve the PC and TV, to date. I am an old guy. This one has 1200x1024 @75 Hz and 1200x 1024 @60Hz
I am confused about the DVI as there are different types. I guess the question is ?DVI
