I managed to solve the problem with AMD graphics cards (tested on a mobility radeon HD 5470).

First download and install the AMD graphics driver for Windows 8, the screen should go blank. Wait until there is no HDD activity (should mean it has installed) then hard reset (hold the power button until it switches off and switch it back on).

While the laptop is starting hold shift and mash F5 to get to recovery options (should see please wait under the loading ring on the windows splash screen) then click "see advanced repair options"

On the next screen click troubleshoot then advanced options. Then we need to click Windows startup settings, then restart.

You should get a screen asking what you want to do, press 4 for safe mode (why does it have to be so much work?)

In safe mode open device manager and disable the intel graphics adapter and restart, you should restart on your fully working AMD/ATI card, check dxdiag to make sure.

Sorry if this is hard to follow, lemme know if it is and I will retype it.

This solution worked perfectly for my setup. I have the exact AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5470 card and the steps here solved my issues with Windows 8 Pro.

I downloaded the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation (RTM) in August and had been using it on a separate partition with no issues. On 8/26 I purchased a Windows 8 Pro key and upgraded. Immediately I ran into problems. Within a few minutes the screen would go dark and unresponsive. After three days of Googling I found this thread and voila!

Shift F5 gets you to recovery mode where you can boot into safe mode? That in itself is a jewel of information I was unaware of.
