    Resolution is stuck at 1280x1024

Hello there guys, I'm having a bit of a problem when it comes to my resolution. I installed a new version of Windows 8.1 and now display adapter is stuck at "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" and I can't adjust my resolution. I have two monitors set up and the second monitor is just duplicating whatever the first monitor is doing whereas before it was extended.

Everything was working perfectly before I re-installed Windows so it's not the cords or anything, it all happened so suddenly. I guess everything isn't being detected correctly.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Sounds like your display driver was replaced by windows generic version. Go to Control Panel>Device Manager and see what it shows under display adapter (probably has a yellow exclamation mark on it). You can right click on it and do "look for new driver" and/or -

go to the graphic's card website and get the latest drivers. You specs don't say what kind of computer you have - if it is a laptop go the laptop manufacturer's site (i.e. Dell), if it is a desktop computer you need to know what graphic card (built-in or add-in) you have then you can get from that site (i.e. intel graphics if built-in, NVidia or ATI if add-in, etc.)

Okay thanks.. On my Tower there is a sticker and it says "AMD Athlon II 620" and also "NVIDIA GeForce 9100". I'm not sure which is the one I need to find the driver to, thinking Nvidia. I probably sound really stupid right but I'm okay with that.

*EDIT - Just downloaded the correct Nvidia driver and it says it stopped because it cannot find the compatible hardware.

9 series is right one if GeForce 9100. Although not sure if 64 bit or 32 bit windows, so select the right one then download, see if it helps.
    Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

So this PC originally came with Windows 7, so if I install that and re-install windows 8.1 do you think it will fix this issue? Windows 8 was running good for the longest time up until yesterday when I wanted to get a different version..

In the device manager it says "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" which is weird because before I upgraded it was something else. If I open up my PC do you know how I would be able to locate it?

That is an integrated display adapter on an old computer,

Your best bet is trying the driver offered here under original drivers,

HP site shows no system drivers for Windows 8 at all, system made back in 2009.Now said working fine with just Windows 8 or 7 ?
I would also do this first without a second monitor hooked up,installing a driver, as needs to be possibly setup before another monitor is added and after second display put on system need to set it up in display properties in control panel. All matters if working fine with Win 8 before.
