I have new computer with old Monitor (not very old It is Samsung SyncMaster 920W)

and new harddisk want to setup win8.1 from DVD
I booted into DVD it show Windows Logo

When it switch to "Preinstall Environment Setup"
My Monitor turn into black with message

----------------------------------
Not Optimum Mode
Recommended Mode 1440x900 60Hz
----------------------------------

"Preinstall Environment" still alive and If i press "escape" twice it will boot.

I think my monitor not accept the that resolution for setup, and i dont know what to do, buying new monitor is bad idea for me.

Is there any idea to tell "setup" to change the resolution.

I've never seen windows switch to a Video output that did not have a monitor connected. Some monitors will not display certain resolutions. When you get to that screen try entering the monitor setup menu and see if you can override the message.

It will be one of 3
1 - Not compatible resolution for my monitor
2 - Setup switched to another terminal (DVI here)
3 - My graphic card (embedded) not compatible.

Before borrow a monitor, is there any way to as setup (by pressing a key) to change the resolution?

Up to a higher one? No I don't think so, not in Windows. F8 safe mode will let you go the other way when you set it too high for your monitor, but not up. It's all up to your monitor being able to go down. That's the first time I've heard of an issue like this. I have several LCD monitors and they all can show low res images, even my wide screen monitor.

I borrowed another Monitor (LG older than my monitor), then booted again with Win8.1, It is works, i can see the setup screen, i installed Windows 8.1 like a charm.
Then i return back to my monitor, it is work with win8.1, and work fine after installed new driver of my graphic card.
Now we i have problem to fix in Repain Mode in booting, i can't see the screen again, i need to use another monitor, that is bad.

Is that mean i need to buy a new monitor that compatible with 8.1 setup?

If you can't figure out how to set the monitor to work at a lower resolution then, yes you may have to buy another monitor. I say may because it all depends on how often you need to enter repair mode or access the BIOS. I'd have a good look through all the monitors built in setup options.

Maybe the driver of your samsung monitor is not compatible with windows 8.1.
Try running this driver in compatibility mode.

When your in the Preinstallation Environment (Installing Windows) its running the default basic driver that only supports low resolution. The OP's issue is his monitor will not display at that resolution. There is no compatibility mode at this stage of the windows setup, it's basically already in compatibility mode. Most monitors will display a lower resolution than their native recommended resolution. That's why setup runs at a low resolution. This is the first time I've heard of one that won't?

Right, I am running windows through my age from win3.11 until 8.1, this first time I saw this kind of problem, I think it is a bad frameware of Samsung and also I can consider it is a bug in windows "Preinstallation Environment" because other systems installer (Linux, Windows XP, Win 2000 server) work fine for me.

BTW Thank you for you replay :)

IMHO, its an issue with the monitor not auto adjusting to the low resolution input. Going into the monitor setup are setting it back to defaults may fix it, hard to say. Usually you only get that screen if you set the resolution too high. That's when compatibility mode will bail you out. You select VGA mode and then adjust it back to what works.
