Please help, not a computer wiz....

microsoft basic display driver is the only thing that is showing for my HP dv9 laptop. I have an nvidia GeForce/AMD card, but when I downloaded the drivers from the nvidia site, it will not install. My resolution looks awful....
I am not a computer wiz, so any help is greatly appreciated....

    Thanks all

Hi, and welcome to the forums,

    32 or 64 bit Windows?

Please open Device Manager, right click on Basic Display, choose Properties then go to Details tab. Change the dropdown arrow to say Hardware ids. Then copy/paste the results to here.

    Ctrl+A = selects all info
    Ctrl+C = copy
    Ctrl+V = paste

And just so ya know, there is no such thing as GeForce/AMD card. GeForce is for NVIDIA and they are a competing company to AMD. They do not work together on any products. It's likely that you have an NVIDIA solution, but we will see.

HP uses AMD processors, and they do have GEForce video cards, his HP pavilion dv9 laptop has drivers available at HP Support & Drivers | United States it will just detect his PC. Like myself he can JUST
used the Windows 7 display driver, and if it is as he says, no driver installed, that site will correct all errors on pavilion dv9 laptop.
Also HP includes a property sheet so that if he contacts support he can bring it up for Tech Support. Also Harry, look on the bottom of your laptop, it will give you, your service tag number, and with that it will show you the available upgrade path of your pavilion dv9.

It will not detect a Windows 8 operating system.

    "

    • You are not running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7"

Not to sound too arrogant because that's not what I mean: This website offers much quicker and better help than any company's help desk. Besides, any help desk will not deal with an operating system in beta such as 8.

Maually typing DV9 into HP.com and pressing Enter changes my query to DVD and shows drives. lol

At your link, it shows this: "We were unable to locate the Drivers & Software downloads page for "dv9" "

And then again, even if it does work out somehow, you'd still be setting him up with old drivers.

Why don't you try it this WAY type in instead "pavilion dv9", seeing as how HP makes more than a single product with that model # ALSO try the service tag, with the service tag it is independent of an operating system and BTW I am using Win8cp, and it SEES my pc none the less, and the components inside of it. I have the HP pavilion dv9000. I just use my service tag for identification.

Do we need another "understanding" discussion or shall we simply instead, save face here and leave the proper help as is? (My points above haven't been digested, apparently.)

(Please, I'm asking nicely not to interject with all this sidetracking nonsense so I don't have to point out how much fail it is while actually trying to help someone.)

Cool deal. You forgot to answer about 32 or 64 bit though. If you don't know which, press Windows key + Pause/Break key at the same time and you'll see.

Or if you don't have those keys, type msinfo32 in the Start menu then press Enter. Look at System type line for either x86 or x64.
