Help! Can't get external monitor to work on my new laptop

    Hi All,

I was running the Windows 8 CP on my PDC laptop up until this weekend when that machine died.

I picked up an Asus R500V from Micro Center. Everything seemed to be OK, but when I hook a second monitor up to the laptop nothing happens. The laptop my come out of power save for a second or so, but goes right back to thinking it has no signal. I've tried with several different monitors and with both the VGA and the HDMI ports. No luck.

I went out to the Asus website and downloaded the NVidia driver from the Asus support site. Now it's got this weird thing where it thinks "something" is connected (I can drag the mouse over) but it doesn't really seem to know what it is and doesn't recognize when it's disconnected.

This is the third laptop I've installed Windows 8 on this weekend where there was some sort of show-stopper; tried an HP, no drivers for the WiFi, tried a Dell, no drivers for the main display. I'm getting a little worried and can't keep taking laptops back to the store.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm getting a little desperate.

    Thanks,
    J

    Hey,

Drivers are no problem. Let me know whatever you need and then I'll request a little specific info. Once I have it, it's all butter from there.

As for the external monitor, first thing is to check that Windows is set to supply 60 Hz for the refresh rate to it. If it is set at anything other than that, change to it.

After doing that, if there is still no luck, try running a Windows Update while the monitor is connected to the machine. It might give you a monitor driver.

    Hey GMan,

    Thanks for the response.

If the sticker on the front of the laptop is to be believed, I have an NVidia GeForce 630M. In the Display Adapter node of the Device Manager I have two display adapters listed; the NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 M and a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. The NVidia was displayed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter until I downloaded the driver from the Asus web site and installed it by right clicking on one of the nodes in Display Adapter and selecting "Update Driver..." and having it look in the folder with the driver I had downloaded from Asus. I also downloaded an Intel Graphics Driver (version 8.15.10.263) from the Asus site, but it wont install; trying to install it via the device manager results in being told the Microsoft had decided I have the correct driver and if I run the setup.exe I get with the drivers I get an error that says "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software." The link on the Asus site for the machine is ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download K55VM even though the mode number does match, this is where the serial number search took me.

Checked the setting for the monitor, it was already set to 60 Hz.

If I plug a monitor in Windows doesn't even seem to recognize it unless I click the Detect button on the screen resolution window. Once I do that a second box appears next to monitor one in the picture, but the box says "Another display not detected." The Display drop down lists "1. Mobile PC Display" and has an option that says "Available display output on NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 M" which if selected sets the options in the Multiple Displays drop down box to "No display detected" and "Try to connect anyway on: VGA" If I select the "try to connect..." option the text in the box that represents monitor two disappears and it looks like a greyed out monitor. My options in the Display drop down are "1. Mobile PC Display" and "2. Display Device on: VGA" If I select "2. Display Device on: VGA" and then select "Extend these displays" in the multiple display drop down Windows _thinks_ the other monitor is hooked up and working. It will even let me drag the mouse over there, but no display.

OK, fell like I just wrote a novel. Again, thanks for any help you can give me. I'm even open to nuking and paving the machine at this point. It's a new machine, so there's not much on it anyway.

    Thanks,
    J

"In the Display Adapter node of the Device Manager I have two display adapters listed; the NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 M and a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter."

Let's see what's going on with this one in bold. In Device Manager, right click on it. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to say Hardware ids. Copy/paste results to here.

We need to install a driver for it. The info you post will tell us exactly what it is.

    Hi
    Just curious.

    • Did it work when you set/select display output to "Duplicate"?
    • Did you check the monitor cable whether it still functional?
