Solved GPU throttles up with any Windows 8.1 metro app running

This may be a common issue for everyone, but I would like to ensure a long life for my new GTX 970. Basically, if any metro app (PC Settings, Store, Calc, Lockscreen etc.) is running, even in the background, my GPU core/Memory will shoot up and lock at standard clocks as opposed to low power mode.

Does it do this for everyone, or perhaps is it a power setting issue?

It's not a huge deal to close the apps, but I have the lockscreen enable on its own, so the PC will just stay in this state 100% of the time when not being used.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

My laptop doesn't do it. Sounds like you have something screwy going on with power/GPU settings. Simple apps like that are an extremely small load on a GPU like that.

Thanks for that. I did mess around with the W8 power options but no dice. I also changed the Nvidia Control Panel setting from Maximum power to adaptive and it still didn't do anything. I'm using a modified BIOS on my GTX 970, so perhaps the changes made to the power table by the creator may have had an effect. I'm going to try flashing the stock vBIOS again, or at least edit the modified one vs. stock to see what differences there are there.

Cheers.

Yea, a modified GPU Bios could definitely be a problem. That is one thing I never mess with personally.

Yep it was my fault. I flashed a modified BIOS and then modified it again with some custom settings. I just re-flashed it with the defaults and it works fine now.
