So I recently Installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my alienware m17x laptop and I can't get it to recognize my graphics card. I have Dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M and Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9100 Processor. Every game I try to run is slow as hell. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Sorry if not providing enough information, kind of new here.

Welcome,

32 or 64 bit Windows?

If 32, I can mod an inf for you to install latest driver.

If 64, I can still do it but then you'd have to sign it (I never have been arsed how to but it's easy) or disable driver enforcement permanently or at boot.

What is your hardware id? Right click the Basic Adapter in device manager, Properties, Details tab. Change the dropdown to say Hardware ids. Copy/paste the results here and please do not use a screenshot instead.

On my guide I show how to sign drivers. It's a guide for the Intel HD 2000/3000, but the signing part is exactly the same. To distribute the driver download the Custom Certificate Installer I made, or make your own by extracting the installer and examining the batch file. (Chrome will say its a malicious file. It's not.)

A little confused here. You said you have an NVIDIA card but not you've supplied an Intel hardware id.

You probably have a hybrid solution that switches between Intel and NVIDIA depending on the graphic needs. In this case, you'd have to wait for your laptop maker to supply a driver installer for it to work right. Or you can try the latest driver offered for a previous OS.

I don't think anyone has gotten that feature to work otherwise but I dunno. I don't have anything like that and can't test things out to see for myself.

Maybe XDleader555 knows a little something.

If you have an Intel driver try installing this first, which in turn allows you to install the Intel driver. (32bit)

The Intel driver I linked is found on my thread here. You have to use version 8.15.10.2622. (The latest laptop driver)

Perhaps after installing the Intel driver you will be able to install the Nvidia driver.

I don't know if Nvidia lets you set applications on high performance but if it does set the exe file dwm.exe (desktop windows management) you can find it in task manager, I just figured out why mine seemed laggy... afterwards performance was way above expectations!!! hope this helps

Ran into the same when I installed Windows RP, just go to NVidia's website, beta drivers, and get the beta one for Windows 8 RP that matches your card. Remember now with ANY beta driver, there might be problems, they aren't the final, polished drivers yet. Also during the install tick the box that ask you to send the problem report log to Nvidia.

Sorry, but you can't.
That is Intel i845 family of chipsets, that are no longer supported by Intel nor has been made a WDDM driver.
Windows XP Display Driver Model (XDDM) cannot be installed in Windows 8 due to removal of support for XDDM driver.

You ought to have posted this in a new thread.

Google would find it for you. If you search on PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7211&CC_0300, you'll find that the controller is an AMD Radeon Mobility 2300. As it's for a notebook, the best place to find drivers is at the notebook's manufacturer. If there are no Win8 drivers, try Win7 or Vista drivers. (XP drivers will not work.)
