    New pc - new graphics - 3D?

There is an option for me, via my graphics card software to initiate 3D desktop etc. I presume I need special (not cheap) external video interfaces (glasses!!) to see it ? So, is it actually worth it. Oh - and I wear glasses!!!

Yes, you would need glasses. Here are some reviews of it

Pay attention to this part: "and the 120Hz display necessary for producing the 3D images"

yes, mine is fixed 60hz, so a new monitor would be required if I choose; probably not.

Darn expensive those 120Hz ones and that refresh rate is of no much use for anything else.

If only there were a lot of programs and games for 3D, it would pay to do it. Imagine CAD 3D or architectural CAD in 3D, that would be something. I had 3D glasses with Atari 1040 ST, late '80s with a CAD program, I think it was Drafix 3D and it was beautiful even on that low res and it showed only lines, not surfaces. It was so much easier to envision something you were working on. I imagine some 3D flight sim would be good with 3D too.

It obviously has its plus side. But I am not a 'full time' gamer. I play for fun, usually in evenings. Silent Hunter 4, 7 years old and still brilliant. Far Cry 2 excellent graphics on modern cards. Even Sid Meiers Pirates is great on my new pc, full screen (24 inch) as are the others. One I have been playing for many many years is Freelancer, from MS. I have a total rewrite mod which upgrades it and the graphics are sublime now, but backgrounds were 'a bit pixely'. I mention this because when it opens it used to tell me that it did not detect a 3d card. The basic Freelancer is 12 years old now, but is now 'just an engine'.

All of the video cards nowadays are 3D, it refers to internal workings, not the ability to display true 3D on screen, glasses or not. That older game probably did not detect your GPU correctly, that's all. Actually, only after video cards incorporated 3D technology in it's processor, they are being referred as "GPU", some older ones had a 3D Accelerator on the separate chip on video card or even a whole add-on card.
