Hi!

Well I had to send my motherboard into service so I borrowed mums laptop a dell inspiron 1750.
The laptop screen is not my favorite cup of tea so to speak. And today I bought an adapter to connect my regular monitor to the laptop. And the dell won't recognize it at all. Trying to send a simple inquire to dell support is impossible, would need to pay for their support. Thought it could have been driver issues or so but can't find anything about it. This laptop originally shipped with windows 7, but mum upgraded to windows 8 during the early campaign when it was like 20€ now it's upgraded to win8.1.

Any ideas how I can get this horrible laptop to recognize my screen?

Most all Notebooks/Laptops have a VGA port or DVI port that allows connecting a projector or external monitor. It is controlled by a key combination of Fn + Fx which toggles the port On or Off. There's three settings, LCD Panel only, External port only, or both at the same time.

On my Dell Inspiron 15R it's the Fn + F1, others may be F5 or F8, usually marked by a symbol resembling a TV/Monitor. The proper F key usually is marked in the same color as the Fn key but have seen some Notebooks where that was reversed, just pressing F key worked. Have also seen one newer Notebook with only an HDMI video port.

Well after insane amount of fiddling and cursing and swearing (and installing windows 7 home premium) This dell now semi recognizes there is something like a second monitor. But doesn't popup anywhere remotely close to windows 7, only in the application of "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator..." And my monitor seems quite confused it sort of screams I want HDMI.. (Tried this process while using Dells official drivers well didn't work at all).

And this inspiron is ancient more or less was a medium workhorse back in 2010 now it's well a low performance thing. But it does it's job quite well, mainly browsing, paying bills, reading/writing mail that sort of thing. Only me who would have desired to get use of my sweet monitor instead of the inbuilt horrible thing. :)
