Hello,

I have a problem that I can't seem to find an answer to. I have an HP TouchSmart tm2 with windows 8 installed. The video card is ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series. I've downloaded and installed the AMD Catalyst™ Drivers Windows® 8 Consumer Preview. After re-boot I get "This device cannot start. (Code 10). Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

Hi there and welcome.

First, update motherboard bios to latest.

Next, disable everything in bios that is not used, like if there are any ports you know you will never need etc...

Third, boot to Windows and see if it all helped.

Fourth, if not, tell me x86 or x64 Windows along with the hardware id of the video adapter. To do so, in device manager - right click it, Properties, Details tab. Change the dropdown to say Hardware ids. Copy/paste results here.

You're welcome. What is the error it is giving? It should do alright, since your id is included.

You can instead, install the Windows 7 driver from HP's website for your specific machine.

Let me guess...you upgrade installed Windows 8?

Try installing the latest version of the Intel chipset utility from HP or Intel's site, for your model.

Also ensure that the latest Power Management utility is installed well.

I don't think this is relevant but who knows! Catalyst had a bug whereby it sometimes looked for a file called .dll instead of atioglxx.dll in \system32

To fix it in a command window copy atioglxx.dll as .dll

Like I said, a very long shot.....

Hi
I am facing the same problem. I have ATI Radeon HD 5000 series, along with some Intel built in card. Recently I installed Win 8 Consumer Preview. The ATI driver doesn't start(Code 10). Also when I try installing the ATI driver given on their site for Windows 8, the screen just goes blank. Waited patiently for 30 mins but no luck.

Try installing the 4.2 Beta of Catalyst and check your BIOS to ensure the inbuilt graphics is disabled.

Same thing happened when I tried installing that. While installing the ATI Driver, the screen went blank(waited for some 40 mins). Disabling inbuilt graphics meaning the Intel one? I uninstalled their driver but it ATI still couldn't start.

A friend of mine installed Win8. I don't think he has any other GPU then ATI (I mean I don't think he has Intel) and his is working

For what it's worth the Code 10 error is a generic Device Manager error, which is quite often displayed when the 'real' cause of the problem is unknown. As there is little by way of information here, it may be worth checking the Windows event logs, particularly the system log, for any additional information...

Hi, I'm have the same issue with a AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series in a Sony Vaio Z power media dock.

The inbuilt Intel HD graphic card works fine but The AMD in the dock has the yellow "!" (Code 10) problem, anyone had any luck?
Works fine with Windows 7 and Server 2008r2

P.S running Windows 8 Release Preview

Its actually a: AMD Radeon HD 6650M

Hi There... Same Issue, actually registering to get that fixed.

Have tried everything, ATI RAD HD 3650 here... Just wanting my dual docking station setup to work again, yet nothing seems to work. Updated everything, however, it constantly switches back to the Microsoft Intel (4) chipset family, and no Catalyst control center possible to be run...

Any good explanations?

I have this problem as well, Error code 10, the device cannot start, I get more information and it just tells me to update the driver.

I use the Windows 7 driver from HP and I get the error "Unable to find any installable components" when I select custom install. If I use the driver from AMD (that says its compatible with AMD mobility radeon HD 5000 series) I get a blank screen which persists after a reboot and I have to use system restore to roll back.

My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv6-3182ea specs are:

Intel i5 2.53Ghz
ATI mobility radeon HD 5470 (switchable with the integrated chip)

Also HP does not give me a fixed mode graphics option in the BIOS which is up to date (official HP update) so I am unable to try setting that.

If anyone can help I will really appreciate it, it would be a shame to have to roll back to windows 7 just because of this, but the dedicated graphics is important to me.

Leschatlabs.net makes custom ATI drivers for systems with switchable graphics. Running his 12.9 beta drivers on my HP Envy 17 with Win 8. It installs both Intel and ATI drivers.
