New Monitor - Not the right display resolution!

Hello! Just today I started using a brand new monitor for my HP laptop. It's pretty old, I'd had it for quite a while now. It's a SyncMaster 2043 SNX, and I have managed to get it to fill the screen with a bad 1280x720 resolution. My Native monitor resolution is 1600x900 on my laptop; is there any way to make it fill the external monitor with it's Native resolution?

    Thanks!

What options do you have in your screen resolution:

That monitor should support 1600x900, when you unplug the monitor does your laptop screen resolution support 1600x900, it should but i'm just wondering if you can actually select that resolution?

    Are your graphics drivers up-to-date?

Where would I find my drivers? I tried Device Manager>Moniters but it just shows "Generic pHp Moniter" Which is up-to-date. For my video card drivers, due to my excessive amount of games, are all updated.

I don't often install drivers for monitors as they tend to "just work" but if you search for windows updates, under optional are any listed for your monitor?

Wow, uh, after I installed those updates the monitor blanked out and now I'm left with only my laptop screen...

    1. What were the updates?

    2. Does it detect the monitor if you look at the screen resolution settings

Nevermind, restarted computer and that's fixed. Back to the subject, even with the new drivers and updates installed, it does not show the 1600x900 settings still

Both primary and secondary displays are 1080p, native. Windows says both are running at 1920x1080, but I can visually see the secondary display is running a lower resolution. The GPU is GeForce GTX 560M, with the latest drivers. I didn't have this issue with Windows 7. Any ideas?
