Friends - On my laptop running 8.1 I need to remedy the often-seen "Display Driver Stopped Responding" display crash. On other systems equipped with AMD GPU components I could use the CCC Presets [Profiles] + Overdrive to workaround the strict Windows timing parameters, increasing the idle clock and core clock targets for the Preset, then invoking it [which requires AMD Overdrive]. On this notebook, no such option is accessible. There is a lot of chatter on the web about this and it is not new to 8.

Anyone know for SURE what a cure is? What I'm gathering is that there should be a Registry entry for a key that deals with Overdrive, but it is missing on the Registry I can see.

Otherwise, I don't know of a certain fix. Microsoft/TechNet board suggests a Registry hack to alter the base windows timing parameters but in the past I have found that not a good solution. It may cut down from 20 errors a week to four or five, but it does not have the surety that the CCC/Overdrive fix is - which targets only the GPU in use

Verify from the manufacturer that you have the correct drivers installed, I hope you did not update your drivers via Windows Update.
In some cases to avoid your problem you could downgrade your driver.

drivers are fine. functions fine until it bails. AMD is the source.

are you familiar with the issue? and with Overdrive?

To be honest I have been researching it and do not fully understand it yet.
