Does AMD Catalyst need to be running?

The question is simple. Do I need to enable the AMD driver Catalyst on the startup menu and have it running in the background of my machine? IF not necessary, does it benefit in anyway if the software is running?

Not real sure on that. I too had it running but disabled it. I haven't noticed any issues.

It has been a feature, if you are running AMD devices, for many years. Since Windows 7, (and maybe a little earlier?), the "Advanced" functions it offers can, in any event, be set up as defaults through the Control panel. I like to streamline my installations as much as possible, and have always disconnected it soonest. I have not investigated whether or not it is heavy on resources - it could be of more significance to gamers?

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
You mean Catalyst Control Center ? If you are not setting custom profiles, overclocking or changing parameters a lot, you don't really need it to run all the time. Don't uninstall it though, just disable it from startup.

I disabled it a long time back and don't have it running on boot , I've never had any issues.

CCC is not required unless you want further control over how your games perform, or further enhancements of controlling your monitor. It also allows you to overclock your card and/or control the GPU's (video card) fan.

If these are features you don't use or need you can simply uninstall CCC. I personally see no reason to disable or remove it as it really doesn't use a lot of resources or take up a lot of space (the entire driver package is about 260 meg, which also includes CCC).
