Solved Intel Graphics driver fails in running and updating.

Hi,

I have been getting these errors in Event Viewer intermittently, every 1-2 weeks since upgrading to Windows 8.1 in October. I have an HP m6-1158 (specifications linked).

I had to get rid of my last computer because of constant BSODs because I changed out the graphics drivers so often. That's why I'm reluctant to do it again. A friend advised me to do it only if there's a problem, otherwise leave them alone. If I do update them, he said, it's best to go through the computer manufacturer. Last time when my computer failed, I installed drivers from AMD, so I have been avoiding theirs and Intel's websites.

With this system, that I've had since May of last year, I haven't been able to update the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 with this Windows 8 driver or this Windows 8.1 driver. Each time I tried, I got an error that my computer does not meet the necessary specifications. Therefore I left it alone and the only driver installs recorded in Device Manager for it are from when I bought the system in May 2013 and the 8.1 update in October.

The Radeon driver is from 2012 and came with my computer. According to Device Manager, it reconfigured or reinstalled for 8.1 but the driver version has not changed. I have not had any major issues with gaming performance. I tested Far Cry 3, which runs great.

I recently installed the game Papers, Please. After constant crashes on startup, I contacted support, who advised me to change the AMD switchable graphics options for the game to High Performance. After that, it runs fine. That leads me to think that there is an issue with the Intel driver, but after many searches of their forums, it appears that they are of little help.

I'm wondering if this is an issue that it worth fixing at all.

About your only hope when it comes to updated drivers for Intel/AMD switchable laptops is leshcatlabs.net. The manufactures are very bad at providing updates. The trick is the Intel driver which also has to be coded for switchable systems. It has to be updated to accept newer AMD drivers. The old Catch-22.

Last time when my computer failed, I installed drivers from AMD, so I have been avoiding theirs and Intel's websites.

Both AMD and Intel, as well as NVIDIA for that matter, always provide excellent drivers and never ever cause any issues to make a computer fail physically.

There is one notable exception many years ago when NVIDIA provided an update that set fan speeds unwell and some cards died because of it. They did however, stand by their products of course, and made well with the owners that suffered. A very rare, one time deal.

Running the latest drivers, especially for video, is good practice. This is especially true if you play games.

Popeye up above there is on point with what he is saying. Thumbs up to that. Leshcat does some good things I've noticed, for people that need what he produces. I never myself needed it because I don't have any switchable graphics, but I have helped many people over the years use his driver packages. Thumbs up on that.

Well then I'm guessing what messed up my last system was installing the wrong graphics driver. I realized later on that I had installed the desktop driver rather than the notebook, which stupidly were given the same model numbers. It wasn't until I ran ATI's upgrade scan that I realized the file did not contain the necessary word "mobility." Anyway, I think at that point the damage was irreversible, since I kept getting BSODs after uninstalling and reinstalling various drivers.

Isn't it true that computer manufacturers often tinker further with graphics cards, making OEM drivers obsolete for them? I've heard that from my friend and I'm pretty sure I've read it a few places online as well.

To see what happened with my last computer, click here. The problem was not actually solved at the end of it, though. The BSODs became less frequent but eventually the frequency rose again and it became unusable. That same friend, who has been fixing computers professionally for several years, tried everything and then suggested replacing it.

This might help. Do you see anything abnormal here?

P10:

I'm somewhat worried that atiumdag.dll_unloaded is listed as the faulting module in Event Viewer and that file is also the primary driver file for my ATI card, according to GPU-Z. Again, let me reiterate that I just want to make sure that my set-up will not cause me problems and I'd like to avoid making any serious changes, if possible. I don't have to have the latest technology, I just want everything to be functional.

Mobility/desktop drivers are same.

It's common to hack .infs for desktop drivers to install to laptops and is done all the time.

Very doubtful any hardware was damaged. BSODs are mostly caused by poor setup with regards to all drivers, not just video.

I'm not overly interested in all the history of the machine at all, but you can make a new thread in the BSOD section of this forum for it and I'll fix it up for ya.

As for your machine in this thread: Have you gone to Leshcat as suggested????

The old machine is gone. I removed the hard drive and sold it. Last I heard it works fine, so it must've been a driver issue. It was an integrated card with the processor, so the desktop model would have been completely different. I mean correct me if I'm wrong since I've never really specialized in hardware, but I believe they're made differently.

The only reason I started this thread is because of the problem in Event Viewer. I want to make sure it's not going to cause other problems. I checked out the link but didn't install anything because, like I said, I'd only do so if there are issues with the drivers that I already have.

You made a thread complaining about an issue, and then post this in it. Do you see the irony in that?

Just stick with the OEM provided drivers unless you need updated ones for some reason. AMD and Intel are huge rivals and they don't make it easy to update outside the OEM chain. The site I mentioned is about the only place for updated drivers other than what the manufacturer provides.

Roll back to the original OEM drivers and be done with it if you don't need newer drivers. The Intel driver crashing on a specific game could be anything. If the game works on the AMD graphics then so be it. I think you are over analyzing a bit.

Please don't hesitate to update if you run into further problems.

No I don't see any irony. I'm not complaining about the event in Event Viewer, I'm just asking if it's actually a problem. I know enough about computers to know that many events can safely be ignored. If you're familiar with the event, let me know. If not, I appreciate your attempt at helping.

I know you don't want to talk about my old computer but its faults are why I'm avoiding driver installs on this one. I mean I have backups and a service plan, but I'd prefer to avoid major headaches. I really don't want to start again. A system format would take up around a month of my life and I can't afford that right now.

If you do notice something worrying, i'll definitely attempt an update. Right now things seem to work okay so, following the advice of my friend and other stuff I read, I think the best course of action would be exactly nothing.

You're making scenarios up without merit:

"I really don't want to start again. A system format would take up around a month of my life and I can't afford that right now."

There's no need for that or to even consider it, so I'm unsure why it's even mentioned.

You made a thread asking: "I'm wondering if this is an issue that it worth fixing at all." then proceeded to even "Thanks in advance for any help!"

Then when given a solid suggestion to try, you bring up formatting?

That is irony by any standard.

Thanks for your reply popeye. That's what I was wondering. So you don't think the event is cause for concern, correct? I would have guessed the same since there was no actual pop-up type error, I just wanted to make sure. I know I'm being cautious but I really like my new computer and don't want anything to go wrong.

You are really getting "wrapped around the axle" as they say. Chill and see if you run into anything else. If no BSOD's then don't lose sleep. You seem to be over concerned with one event. I'm not clairvoyant, anything can happen with electronics and software.

Just saying, relax about this issue for now.

You made a thread asking: "I'm wondering if this is an issue that it worth fixing at all." then proceeded to even "Thanks in advance for any help!"

Then when given a solid suggestion to try, you bring up formatting?

That is irony by any standard.

I guess it's just a simple misunderstanding, MasterChief. I'd just prefer to know more about this event before I decide to make changes. That's the kind of help I was looking for, primarily. I do appreciate it, though.
