Nvidia GTX460 and P8Z77V Deluxe No POST

I have a bit of a strange problem here, my main video is run from the Gigabyte Nvidia GTX460 1GB OC, it has worked pretty much OK since I had it, after installing some later versions of the Nvidia drivers (310+) I had the odd driver crash where the screen recovers, not too much of an issue.

Lately things made a turn for the worse, if I powered the PC down and switched it back on from OFF, I found that in many cases the monitor would simply go into power save mode (Dell 24 Ultra sharp) getting no video signal from the card. Sometimes a reboot would fix it, sometimes it took a few power off and on to get it to fire up.

It gradually got worse, sometimes the PC was obviously booting up as I could hear the beeps and watch as some of my devices were obviously being fired up, but no display. Then it even got to the point that it would not even boot! Just sitting there with all the fans at 100% no display no beeps.

I cured this in the short term by resetting the BIOS, that worked for a couple of days, then reflashed the BIOS again worked intermittently. (P8 has a BIOS reset switch and I also removed the CMOS battery.) At first it looked OK then began having the same problems again - At the moment, if I put the GTX460 in the 1st PCI e slot it is trying to boot, it gives the beep and is probably going to the log in screen for Win 8 as I can see it has powered the graphics tablet but there is no video to the Dell (orange light) I have tried swapping the DVI cables and changing the DVI slots, nothing! I tried to use the mini HDMI - HDMI adaptor for the GTX card but my HAF case is too deep and the adaptor fouls.

If I use the Intel 4000 integrated video it works fine too, HDMI-DVI cable (cannot get a Display Port to Display port cable for love nor money here in Thailand) and this stupid Dell monitor has NO HDMI!!!

Next, I pulled the Nvidia card and put in an Asus 5670, it worked fine, went through the BIOS and set everything for auto etc. then replaced the Asus back to the GTX460, again no POST!

Moved the 460 into the second PCI e slot and it works fine, removed it and put it into my other PC and it works fine, I cannot understand what is going wrong, could it be the slot or the card?

The 460 has been working fine for 2 years or so, but now it will not work in the PCI e "Blue " Slot (2 X16) but works OK in the White (2nd slot) and works in the PCI e main slot on another PC - The Asus card works anywhere no problem at all.....any advice?

Surely if the slot was the problem then the ASUS card would fail in that location too but it doesn't! If the GTX460 was the problem then surely I would see a problem on the other PC, but I don't and as I said earlier, it works fine on the P8 in the 2nd slot...
    Thanks.

I don't mind too much if the card is duff! I could do with an upgrade, what I fear most is having to deal with Asus's legendary customer support if I have to return the MB...I think a meal of broken glass is preferable to dealing with those creatures.

I have also experienced similar issue's with my laptop not detecting my monitor. The problem seems to be intermittent and at times I will loose signal to the external display for days. It seems to be a bug in Windows 8.1 which Microsoft has not properly addressed yet. I haven't found a solution so far, however I can suggest a few things to try.

You mention installing "some later versions" of Nvidia's display drivers. The current version for the Nvidia GTX460 is 331.82, try it.

Next, update the BIOS to the current version. BIOS version 1908 states "Fixed Power On By RTC function failed" has been resolved. The current version is 2104, try it.

My last suggestion is to disable FastBoot. Their are several ways to disable it. Start with the option located in the BIOS. Afterwards review the options in the guide below to make sure it is completely off.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
I am going to take a look at this issue regarding fastboot! (I am currently running Nvidia 331.82 and my BIOS is 2104) thanks for the info!

I had a look at the fastboot / fast start up options in my Win 8.1 and I do not have any fast start options in the power plan setup - Actually I do not use Hiberfil.sys, it is disabled and my machine is set to never sleep.)

However, there is a fast boot option in the BIOS, that might be worth a try.

Update: I just had my laptop disconnect on me from the external display. I believe I found a solution.

By resetting the Secure Boot option to factory default I was able to get my display back.

My system has a few options.

    1) reset Secure Boot Keys
    2) disable Secure Boot
    3) reset to factory default

I tried the first option which didn't work, but the third option does. For me at least

Thanks! Will let you know if it works, it is a possibility, as none of this sort of problem occurred until I installed UEFI and secure boot!
