    NVIDIA update

    Hello
    I received an optional Windows update which says;
    NVIDIA Corp
    Graphics adapter WDDM1.1
    Graphics adapter WDDM1.2
    Graphics adapter WDDM1.3
Other hardware NVIDIA high definition audio.

I do average computing with no gaming or emphasis on music.
It is a 226 MB download and optional.
I have a lot of drive space and noticed it said 'driver' at the top. Due to its size I wonder if I would be better off without it or not.
    Do you have a recommendation?
    Thank you
    Peter
P.S. I just read on this forum that someone with NVIDIA had issues and seems to have done away with "The NVIDIA experience" I think he said. It was suggested that he try today's update but he already did away with NVIDIA if I am reading correctly.
Can you remove NVIDIA and still have audio video? I find my programs section to be filled with 6 NVIDEA entries.

That is a display driver for your card that Microsoft have in their update catalog. I did a quick search through the update cataloghttp://catalog.update.microsoft.com and saw the exact driver you are talking about. The other seemingly identical drivers listed there with different sizes are for different platforms, such as x86.

The version associated with it is 1.3.26.4. This is probably a different way of writing out 326.4x (x being something), so it isn't the latest even for WHQL.

In fact, it appears the very same driver was listed back in June for the Windows 8.1 preview. The reason why it didn't show up on your list then is because it no doubt just had Windows 8 not in the inf file. The driver date is misleading as that is the date of the inf, the files are probably the same as the earlier June release for Windows 8.1 preview.

Ideally though try not to use Windowsupdate drivers unless no later drivers are available.

    Driver NVIDIA

    Hello
That was a very thorough explanation of events surrounding the update.
I am not very techy but understand what you said.
I will hold off on the driver as it is optional, large but mostly because as you say, Windows drivers are not the first choice. maybe NVIDE will update it. I may go there and select my data to see if there is an update but will not act impulsively.
    Thank you
    Peter

    @Archer
I went to the NVIDIA's site and after entering my data it identified my pc. The entries(four) had WHQL after them.
Oddly, it prompted me to install Java which I did. When I tried again it continued to say to install java. I checked programs and features and I have java.
Secondly, When I clicked upon a video at the site, it was pornography so I scanned thoroughly and am clean. Lastly, because it said WHQL labs I began to think I maybe should have installed the Windows update.

I am not making a mountain out of a molehill but thought you would find some of this quite interesting. If I did this correctly, it speaks poorly of the site. I am not quite sure what to do at this point.

Are you sure you were at the real Nvidia site? This sounds a bit off. Can you direct me to the page and video? I find this a bit strange.

Are you talking about real porn or digital graphics porn?

Yeah the pornography bit seems suspicious, and Java install too (I don't have Java running and it never prompted for an install)

All Geforce drivers should be accessible from this (official nvidia) link : Drivers | GeForce

As an advice you should always look for your manufacturer's site and not rely on all these sites specializing in drivers downloads. Most drivers on the later are uploaded by users and can include malware.

I typed www.NVIDIA in the address bar and a greenish site came up which looked like the NVIIDIA site I was at before to download my 8.1 package months ago. It was about 200 MB.
The pornography looked real for the brief moment I saw it then clicked it off.
NVIDIA is the name of the Windows update I have hidden.
    1-should I uninstall Java
2-Should I install the hidden Windows update
    Thank you for your help.

If you don't use Java then it's safe to uninstall yes. If you have the latest drivers from nvidia then no need to install any display drivers from windows update, you can choose to hide it if you prefer.

Note : I'm still worried about your download, as I said Java should never be necessary from the nvidia site. But maybe it warned you to enable Javascript ? This isn't the same thing and is perfectly fine if this the case.

I have not needed Java until this incident so I uninstalled it.
It did say Java needed to view so I have run 2 scanners and seem ok.
I hope I am ok if the audio/video is working ok as I am a bit afraid to go to the NVIDIA site again.
Actually under drivers, 4 had to do with games which we don't do and the last was the only non driver one. I have forgotten what it said specifically. I have NVIDIA Ge Force GT 420. Is there another way to see if it is up to date without installing the Windows update?

Control Panel (view as icons) > Device Manager > Display Adapters > NVIDIA Geforce GT 420 > Right click > Properties > Click on the driver tab
It should give you the date this driver was published, and the version.

You can confirm on this site if your driver is the last one : Drivers | GeForce (Put it in your favorites, this is the official site)
Your specific driver (latest recommended) are :
Drivers | GeForce GT 420 (32 bit version)
Drivers | GeForce GT 420 (64 bit version)

Before I do anything, may I ask, when I click driver details. the first 5 or 6 lines say MVIDIA Corp etc. then then next 6 or 7 lines say Windows WOW etc..
Should this driver be uninstalled and reinstalled? It seems it used to be NVIDEA and is now Windows.
Or, should I just go to the site you recommended then compare my details and download if necessary?
Lastly, should I leave well enough alone?
Sorry about the format but I had to condense a lot.
