I gave my 8600GT to my dad when his video card overheated unexpectedly and died.

Hi, I had simmilar situation. I bought Win8 and was pretty dissapointed to see that in fact 8600M GT is not supported.
I had exact same experience with Win7... Late last night I got desperate and searched over my old docs and saw that I used one obsolete NVIDIA driver.
Version of driver that is working fine with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 is NVIDIA 179.48 (release or beta, does not matter).

I hope that it helped.
