Windows 8 stuck in low resolution new laptop (Generic pnp)

Hi guys I just purchased a acer V7-482PG-6662 ( Acer | Aspire V7 | V7-482PG-6662 | Overview ) and it comes with a 1080p display but the issue is that it wont go above 1366 x 768.
This is right out of the box, i cant change to a higher resolution and all the drivers have been updated.

The Nvidia card works fine as it kicks in during gaming but even in games I cannot select a higher resoloution than 1366 x 768.

I even did a fresh install of windows 8 and windows 7 same issue. Device manager indicates "generic pnp display" under the monitor heading.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Others who have bought the laptop have not experienced this issue and their display is at 1080p.

EDIT: Tried a linux live usb and same issue, the resolution is only 1366 x 768, is this a hardware defect?

That's probably the highest resolution it can get on the Laptop Display - Can you plug it in to an external Monitor? It may not have the actual NVidia drivers installed. It may be what the Monitor can handle. It is after all only a 14" display. I had a Gateway Core Duo laptop that gave full 1080p but it was a 17" screen. Most laptops with the 14" screen can only do the resolution you got. I'm, checking that now...

Yep, I have an HP with a 14" WS Display, the highest it gets is 1366 by 768. If you want 1080 you gotta have at least 17" -Even with the actual nVidia drivers, it's a limitation of the screen size. I'm sure that others who had the 1080 as you say, probably had 17" screens. But don't fret, it's still a good laptop.

Does it have an HDMI output? Try plugging it into an HDTV and I'll bet you wioll get full 1080p on that. It will give you that even with an SVGA output.

I can output just fine to another monitor @ 1080p via HDMi and Mini display port. No the laptop has a 1080p display so that is not the issue.

Yah, but at 14" you wont be able to GET 1080- If you get 1080 on an external monitor, then there is your answer. The driver can dole it out, but your 14" screen can't hack it. The screen is merely physically incapable of showing 1080. 1366 by 768 is the best it can do.

Maybe you can set up a custom resolution, I'll try it on this laptop here. Nope, it's capped off at 768.

You may find some answers here:

14-15 inch laptop screen... 1080P

As far as I know the only 1080p panel in a notebook <15" is in the Sony Z. So either you'll have to settle for a 900p panel or move up to 15+"

But that thread was in 2010.

But I noticed this in your specs:

Screen Size14"
Display Screen TechnologyIn-plane Switching (IPS) Technology
Screen ModeFull HD
Screen Resolution1920 x 1080
Backlight TechnologyLED
TouchscreenYes
Multi-touch ScreenYes

Do you have the iPS driver installed?

USUALLY, 1080 is impossible for any monitor under 15". Can you get the 1080 in Windows 7?

Also, if this is a brand new laptop, and it's supposed to give you 1080 and it is NOT... Take is back and get a replacement.

This is actually the first I have heard of a laptop of that screen size actually HAVING that resolution. So the Monitor Panel may be defective.

It also occurs to me if the Device Manager says "generic pnp display" - It's not detecting the actual Monitor Panel. Try updating the driver for the Panel.

There may also be a driver for it in Windows update. Or, in the Acer Website. Check both places. But I would use whatever Driver's came with the unit. There should be a folder on the C drive with all of the actual drivers. If it has a recovery partition, maybe run that. If it wont detect the iPT Monitor and if it wont go to 1080, then something is very wrong with it. Because even my crappy Dell monitors detect for what they are.

Try removing the driver for the Monitor, try rolling it back, etc. It's detecting the wrong hardware.

Hey, yea I cant get 1080p under windows 7 either.

I tried to find a driver for the generic pnp but could not find anything that it would take. It could be the screen ill try to take it back to the shop to exchange it.

I have both intel and Nvidia graphics, but the nivdia ones only kick in when gaming. Its the Intel ones which i would assume are responsible for display resolution.

Ah - That explains it - While the system is using the iNtel video chip, it will be confined to 1366 by 768.

You should have full 1080 when gaming and possibly when using VLC to watch a video.

I had read about a program that bridges systems that have Integrated/Dedicated cards- I'll try to find it, should work for you. I had downloaded it, I can't remember what it was called. I may have it saved on my other computer, I'll look for it later and get back to you. It stared with an I, and it was something like "Ivy Bridge" but that was not it.

There should be some documentation included with that laptop listing specs etc, it may be PDF file stored on the laptop itself. Every laptop I've ever seen comes out of the box already set to the native resolution of the LCD screen attached to it. There are also subtle differences in models. are you 100% sure you are supposed to have 1080p support? I'm not, not for a 14 inch screen.

EDIT: Is that screen shoot from an Acer laptop that is the exact same model as yours?

See, that one says "Mobile PC Display" so it all goes back to the driver for the Monitor.

Also, you should make SURE that your model is exactly the same as theirs. Sometimes they look Identical, but have totally different Monitors, using totally different inverters. I found that out painfully when I tried to replace a Compuke monitor from one laptop with one that I thought was the exact same monitor, but it was totally different, even thought it was the exact same model laptop!

It may be that yours does not have the same hardware as the others that do show the 1080- Or, they have bridged their Video cards somehow.

OK I found the Program I was looking for - It's LucidLogix "Virtu"

Lucidlogix Product List

I think there is a trial version. It combines Dedicated and Integrated Video. Cheapest one is 35 bucks or so. Read the Documentation, if yo have a particular iNtel video, you can use it.

I think it is a driver issue it almost seems like the intel driver installs but its not actually doing anything. I uninstalled the video drivers and the display looked the same, 1366 x 768.

I have to wait till Tuesday anyways due to the long weekend to ask for an exchange so ill keep trying to mess with the drivers.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I would find the driver on the Intel Site, don't use the one from MS.

Check out that Lucid program, it may be somethign you can use.

Done that too ;) drivers are from intel for the iris hd 4400

I have tried everything in my knowledge. I hope the exchange process goes smoothly come Tuesday.

Hey Cruisx, I just ordered one of these. I live in Nova Scotia and I could not find one to buy anywhere. I hope I don't run into one of these issues when my computer arrives tomorrow. One of the main reasons I bought one is because it is meant to do 1080p.

My question is, have you played many games on it? If you have what ones? How did they run?

I am not going to do any heavy gaming on this. I have a good alienware for that... but I am just curious for when I travel. I hope that it can play Starcraft, diablo, such games like that.

Thanks!
