Permanently get rid of low resolution startup

Hello all. I installed Windows 8 Pro on a new PC. I ran into a problem where Windows automatically started at the wrong monitor timing. I temporarily used a TV to get to an advanced startup screen that had a check box for low-resolution. That allowed it to work with my display. I now have a video card that correctly supports my display. The problem is, Windows 8 always boots in low resolution and I have to manually change it after each boot.

The problem is that I don't recall what gave me the screen with the menu. It is not the blue screen with press F1 - F9. This was a standard dialog box with check boxes and a note on the side saying any changes would be permanent. But any method that allows it to permanently boot to a normal screen would be welcome.

I suppose you installed proper drivers from that new video card from it's manufacturer, if so, do the settings from it's control panel as it usually overrides Windows settings.

Thanks for the reply. The drivers are installed. It doesn't matter which method I use, changing screen resolution from a right click on the screen or using the nVidia Control Panel from Windows Control Panel, it reboots in low res. I was hoping someone knew how to get to the config screen where I probably borked it.

Sorry was not able to replicate that problem, all 3 computers I have that are on Win8 have ATI video cards but I have found one place where boot settings have something to do with startup video things , is in msconfig / boot with check boxes for no GUI boot and "base video" and it has a checkbox for " Make all boot settings permanent.

That's it! msconfig. I had tried many things to get the old "Safe Mode" in order to get the i7's built in graphics to talk to the monitor, I'd lost track. I've been away from the computer for a few days but what is very odd is that when I powered it on today to try msconfig, it booted to a 4K screen. No idea why, I'd been through several restarts from installing software, none of which are graphics related (mainly non-PC SDKs). But I'll take it. The option was still set for Base Video. I decided not to mess with it but if it ever acts up again, I'll know where to check first. Thanks a bunch!

Glad it's sorted out. What I found out is that windows and drivers do not always agree which monitor is primary. Win say one and drivers the other one, usually drivers and their control panel win.

Just thought I'd mention after another reboot, it went back to lo-res but changing the msconfig setting has fixed it permanently.

I just installed Windows 8, and each time I boot up my resolution reverts to 800x600 even though my native is 1680x1050. I have to constantly change it after login. I hope this is a simple fix, this is the first time I'm using Windows 8 as my normal OS.
