When I hook my laptop up to the TV with a HDMI cable my laptop screen goes dark and the TV only shows the task bar and the desktop background. Sound works. No mouse or actual programs are displayed. I would like to mirror the TV to my desktop. Thank. My laptop is a HP Pavillion Dv7-4285dx running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.

Open a Video file and see if it plays on the HDMI output. On your laptop, open the Displays manager and tell it to either "Mirror the display onto the TV" or move it completely over.

The fact that you are getting a Desktop is a good sign, there should be a fN/F-key combo which will tell your laptop to move the display over to the TV. Look for the little FN key and then look for any F key which has a Display icon on it. My Gateway laptop does this automatically with Windows 7, but Windows 8 may need additional coaxing.

With my laptop...Samsung RV511 with 7 home premium, all I have to do is plug in the HDMI cable to both devices and then on the TV change the input source from HDMI 1 which is my SAT box to HDMI 3 and it just shows up instantly. This is the same for HP laptop that I have as well.

Ok, so windows 8 should instantly move over to the better screen. It is not doing this, so do it manually in the Displays window.

Once I hook up the cable the laptop screen goes black and my desktop shows up on the TV with the task bar but the mouse doesn't work and any program I had open doesn't show up or my desktop icons.

Try looking for the function key combination but I told you about it'll look like a little TV set up on the F keys I'm not sure which key would it would be. But the display icon for projection and whatnot it looks like a small television. On my gateway it goes through a cycle of functions so if it doesn't show you the whole desktop when plugging it in just keep on pressing that key combination and it should cycle you to the full desktop.

Did you post the exact model number and make? I'll go ahead and look it up and see if I can download the user manual

Yes, try that as well.

The HP Pavillion Dv7-4285dx I found, refers to a DESKTOP PC.

Does this Laptop have a Dedicated Video Adapter or is it Integrated? If so, there may be extra settings in the BIOS you need to access.

Or maybe there is a utility to set up the HDMI output.

I found this entry in the User's Manual

Connecting an HDMI deviceThe computer includes an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) port. The HDMI port connects
the computer to an optional video or audio device, such as a high-definition television, or any compatible
digital or audio component.
Video 35The computer supports one HDMI device connected to the HDMI port, while simultaneously supporting
an image on the computer display or any other supported external display.
NOTE: To transmit video signals through the HDMI port, you need an HDMI cable (purchased
separately), available from most electronic retailers.
To connect a video or audio device to the HDMI port:
1. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the computer.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the video device, according to the device manufacturer’s
instructions.
3. Press the Switch Screen Image key to switch the image between the display devices connected
to the computer.
Configuring audio for HDMI (select models only)
To configure HDMI audio:
1. Connect an audio or video device, such as a high-definition TV, to the HDMI port.
2. Configure the default audio playback device:
a. Right-click the Speakers icon in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar.
b. Click Playback devices.
c. On the Playback tab, click either Digital Output or Digital Output Device (HDMI).
d. Click Set Default.
e. Click OK.

So - Where is your Switch Screen Image Key? I'll look for that. It appears to be the key with an image that is shaped like a TV with two bars on either side:

I've tried using FN and the windows (f4) key and I've tried using the windows button with the f4 key. Still a black laptop screen and the desktop with no mouse, icons, or open programs on the tv. I've tried it on two different brands of tv's too. Dynex and Westinghouse. My android phone work perfectly with both tv's. Just plug and play.

I am guessing you have a Ati Radeon video card in that laptop. If so then you should be able to go into your display options in the control panel and select change resolution and select 'extend the displays' or you should be able to select display 1 or display 2 if the laptop picked up the tv via the hdmi cable. Bear in mind I am saying this because I have a radeon video card in my desktop computer and I can select either of the options and they always work for me... maybe the HP Pavillion works different. I am only offering my opinion with my experience with radeon video cards ok.

The screen is going black but is still there. Also the charms that are brought up turn EVERYTHING black. My main display is still on the laptop, but it's like the back light went off. Any ideas here? The problem is, for some reason, the light in my screen is going out. However I can very faintly see the screen. Thank you!

I am not familiar with that laptop but was just thinking about it and was wondering is there a setting in your bios settings to change the output display? Worth looking into the settings and see if there is one then maybe it can be changed from its default. Possible on that laptop its either laptop screen or hdmi output and not both.
Sorry you are not having any luck there :(

It might be your screen resolution is too big. I usually connect my PC to my HDTV and it worked perfectly! Use WinKey + P then you can just scroll Up/Down randomly then click Enter to see does it responds.

After screwing around with a system for 2 hours that worked yesterday but didn't work this morning, your suggestion worked!
On mine it was the fn F2 that switched between options that didn't exist elsewhere.
I actually went through the whole registration process just to tell you that and maybe help others.
Thanks!!!
