On some system (at least not on mine), you would have to disable the onboard graphics card to make PCI graphics card work. Check the card manual. Although that would defeat the purpose of "adding" a monitor but that's how some systems work. If you want to add another monitor just for basic computing task without the hassle of opening up and trying to make a card work, you might want to look at USB to VGA adapters.

I've tried that before on Win 7 and it works instantly. It's plug and play. No installer (at least the one I got before). But I already upgraded to another card. No harm trying the USB adapter. You can always return it if it didn't work on 8. It is the simplest solution to adding another monitor. I don't see why it won't work on 8.

many people have problems with that on windows 8
just a side question--im planning to upgrade my system--if i get a mainboard that has 2 pci express slots i should be able to install 2 video cards and use all or any of the inputs on those cards? and windows 8 will manage the multi monitor part of it?

and the cards dont have to be the same--right?

You don't need to change your mainboard. just get a graphics card (supported by your mainboard) that supports multi-monitor setup. It's very common these days. But also check you power supply.

Like this one (link) is cheap, but supports 2 monitor setup. But it's not a gaming card.
