In windows 7 my best screen res is 1280x800 which is great, however on windows 8 I only get two options 800x600, or 1024x768 which looks terrible, does anybody know why this is, and is it just because its and early build of windows or are Microsoft just being stupid.

Install the Intel chipset drivers, select the right driver from: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/
EDIT: You could use windows7 drivers.

Well Mate we don't know if he is using Intel, AMD or nVidia. So please go to the display card manufactures website and download the latest update. You may wanna install it under compatibility mode.

I am having the same problem. I found and downloaded the legacy drivers for my card, but they won't install because the amd software can't find the card. It has disappeared from device manager and been replaced with Microsoft generic display adapter.

Even if it has been replaced by a generic display driver, It should still install because it still has the same PCI device ID. Try Installing through the inf manually or if it is one of the newer cards use a later driver than the legacy.

The generic doesn't have much support for displays, just outputting enough until you install a proprietary driver.
