Graphics card not appearing as main one?

    Hello,
First of, I would like to thank the people who put together this site, and everyone on here for there time to help users with questions.
    Secondly,
I just purchased a HP Envy DV6-7250CA with Windows 8 Home Edition x64.
It has a NVIDIA Geforce 630m 2gb graphics card.
When I turned the computer on, followed the instructions and setup windows 8, i then proceeded to right click on the desktop, and went to screen resolution.
The display read, Mobile PC Display.
I then clicked on Advanced Settings, and the adapter type reads Intel HD Graphics 4000.
In the device manager, under Display, I have Intel HD Graphics 4000, and Nvidia 630m Geforce.
I have tried to disable the Intel HD Graphics 4000. and Now when I go to display properties, it Lists Generic, instead of Mobile PC. I have re-enabled Intel HD Graphics 4000, and it shows Mobile PC Display.
I have contacted HP regarding this matter. They advised me to download, through the link they have sent me, the NVidia Geforce 630m 2gb driver from there site, which I did, and reinstalled it. They also said to me that when I right click on desk top, I should have an option that says "Switchable Graphics". But that is not so.
Am I supposed to disable something in UEFI or in BIOS then to make the display adapter appear as NVIDIA Geforce 630M instead of Intel HD Graphics 4000 when I right click on desktop and go to screen resolution, then advanced settings. Or is this just the way its supposed to be.
I guess what i asking, how do I make the Nvidia Geforce 630m my main adapter?
Or is it supposed to be like this.
HP cant seem to answer me.
Can anyone please assist me with this.
    Regards,
    Yuri
    Thank you.

I do believe you need the custom video driver from HP. I've seen other posts dealing with dual graphics cards in laptops with similar problems, and the manufacturers drivers are what are recommended.

What I found was if I go to the Nvidia Control Panel and then to Set PhysX Configuration, from the the select PhysX processor drop down menu, I found the option Auto-select, CPU, or GeForce 630M.
That solved my question. Thank you for your time and effort.

That should work for you, but it's my understanding it should switch on its own when need be? Just be aware that doing that will likely lock out the Intel HD graphics. Your laptop would normally switch to the less power hungry graphics card to save battery power. The HP graphics driver has that functionality built into it, other drivers from Intel or NVidia may not. Also keep in mind that I don't have such a beast so I'm just going by what I have read in other posts.

Okay, thank you for your information, I have switched it to "Auto-select (recommended)", instead of the NVidia GeForce630M full time.

I wonder if there is a way to verify this while actually gaming, to be able to see if the switch did indeed take place?

I am not sure if there is a way to tell. But I tried DeadSpace 3, and it is running just the same, with the maximum graphic settings, when i have the PhysX processor set to GeForce 630M, as i do now with "auto-select". The game play is amazing. But if there is a tool out there to tell us, that would be great.

turn off onboard graphics in your bios and force it to use the dedicated card

There is no option in UEFI to turn of onboard graphics, I havent been able to find it yet. This new HP ENVY DV6-7250ca doesnt use BIOS, it uses UEFI. Maybe I am mistaken, and not quite using the proper terminology. But I will try looking around again. Thank you.

oh i see , i thought UEFI was just an interface for windows (they have been around for years they just decided to give it a name now have they?) I didnt realise you couldnt still access the bios "manually" (what a load of rubbish ha ha )
