    Win8 not filling screen

I recently installed Win8 on an older Sony VAIO laptop. It seems to be running fine, but it's not filling the screen. There is about a 1 1/8 inch black border on either side of the screen (as well as about an eighth on an inch border top and bottom). Since this laptop has a screen that's only about 13 1/4 inches diagonal, this makes for a pretty small display. I attempted to change the resolution, but 1024x768 is grayed out, can't change. I tried the Personalize > Fill/Fit/Stretch options, but they just change how the background fits in the reduced space. Is there a way that I can reclaim the rest of my screen area?

Hi, you could update the chipset driver, uninstall it in Device Manager and reboot, Windows will find the driver for you.

Thanks. Would that be the Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor driver? The current one is showing a date of 6/2006!

Do you have Display Adapter showing in Device Manager? If so uninstall it and reboot. However with an older Viao there may not be a driver available. Did you run the readiness tool beforehand? Also make sure that Windows Update is set to look for updates for everything using Microsoft Update. You can see how here: Windows Update - Automatic Updating - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

I had a very similar issue with an old Dell laptop and had to find the right video driver so that I could change the screen settings and fully utilize the screen. Good luck!

Hello. New to Windows 8. I've figured out the split screen, which will make my work easier. My issue is with the apps in split screen view. When I have the screen at 50:50 the desktop will fill its half of the split. The app on the other hand seems to only fill about 1/3 of its half. I don't...
I've run disk cleaner and System error memory dumps took almost 15GB WTF is that? I don't get any BSOD nor crashes nor any stability issues, except some update which won't let me install. Thanks 48875
Hello! This is an issue for ages. Apparently windows writes zeros by default for all allocated files. Particularly noticable, when downloading with bittorrent, where the app hangs and the hard drive becomes unusable for quite a while. But it's also a problem more generally. Any such allocations...

I recently upgraded to W8 and so far I'm absolutely loving it though I have noticed that the new Span feature for wallpapers uses Fill as a default for wallpapers which do not fit the aspect ratio of your monitors. Is it possible to modify Span to use Stretch instead? Thanks
