Win8 not filling screen

I recently installed Win8 on an older Sony VAIO laptop. It seems to be running fine, but it's not filling the screen. There is about a 1 1/8 inch black border on either side of the screen (as well as about an eighth on an inch border top and bottom). Since this laptop has a screen that's only about 13 1/4 inches diagonal, this makes for a pretty small display. I attempted to change the resolution, but 1024x768 is grayed out, can't change. I tried the Personalize > Fill/Fit/Stretch options, but they just change how the background fits in the reduced space. Is there a way that I can reclaim the rest of my screen area?

Hi, you could update the chipset driver, uninstall it in Device Manager and reboot, Windows will find the driver for you.

Thanks. Would that be the Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor driver? The current one is showing a date of 6/2006!

Do you have Display Adapter showing in Device Manager? If so uninstall it and reboot. However with an older Viao there may not be a driver available. Did you run the readiness tool beforehand? Then go hunting for a driver. I altered my post above....may help.

I had a very similar issue with an old Dell laptop and had to find the right video driver so that I could change the screen settings and fully utilize the screen. Good luck!
