I did a clean Windows 8 Pro install a week ago with no Windows Updates at all and I was able to set my Asus VK266H monitor to it's native resolution of 1920x1200 using VGA, then today I installed the cumulative patch released last month (KB2756872) and rebooted. The monitor resolution dropped to 1024x768 after the reboot.
So I right click the desktop, select the native resolution of 1920x1200 and the screen goes blank for 15 seconds then drops back to 1024x768. I tried the next resolution down which is 1920x1080 which works fine but the image quality looks terrible.
I tried updating the nVidia driver from the standard Microsoft WDM driver to the latest version from nvidia.com which is 306.97-notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, but I still cannot set the resolution to 1920x1200!
So then I tried installing a stack of other KB updates thinking MS may have fixed the problem.. Nope. 1920x1200 still blanks out.
Next I tried uninstalling all the KB updates... 1920x1200 still blanks out.
Then I tried a System Restore back to a week ago... 1920x1200 still blanks out!
For some reason the Monitor driver was set "Generic non-PnP Monitor" so I tried "Generic PnP Monitor" and even 1920x1200 Digital Flat Panel... still blanks out.
I reboot into Windows 7, 1920x1200 works perfectly fine! Even when using the exact same nVidia driver (306.97). Monitor driver is "Generic PnP Monitor".
Then I tried another VGA Monitor, a Benq FP222W and that too has the same problem.
I cannot set it's native resolution to 1680x1050. Lower resolutions work fine.
I don't know what KB2756872 did but there is nothing I can do except wipe Windows 8 and reinstall it again, making sure I disable Windows Update.
I would try an HDMI cable but I don't have one to test, but HDMI may have problems with a 1920x1200 signal. (It's HDMI 1.3 I think)
Did Microsoft fiddle with the VGA timing or EDID detection in KB2756872 due to Metro scaling/compatibility issues?
The PC is a Toshiba notebook (Qosmio F60) with these specs:
- CPU: Core i7 Q740
- Chipset: Intel Series 5 (First gen Core i chipset)
- Graphics: nVidia GeForce 330M
