I have my laptop running Windows 8 HDMI'd into a 1080p HDTV, and everything is crisp and pixel perfect except for one thing: red text or other hard red pixels... they're fuzzy. I don't get it either, but it happens in Ubuntu too so I'm assuming that the TV has trouble rendering pure reds.

If your text is fuzzy, you may want to check and make sure that you are using the native resolution of that TV. Also run the cleartype tuner. If your TV is really old, it may not process HDMI signals perfectly (there are actually different versions of HDMI specification, for instance). If you're looking for a new display, get an HDMI-capable 1080p HDTV that gets favorable reviews with PC HDMI hookups. You can also find 1080p monitors for even cheaper, if you don't mind not having a TV tuner or built-in speakers-- just take note of what outputs your video card has (HDMI? DVI?) and ensure the monitor has the input to match.

Touchscreens will be more expensive, but I am not an expert on them.
