Windows 8 Release Preview Build 8400

Having trouble with display on my hp mini

My HP Mini 311-100NR running Windows 8 release preview build 8400 is having display issues. When I switch programs or screens the display will Flicker for a couple seconds and sometimes goes black. (usually when in browser)

I tried downloading the win 8 driver installer for the NVIDIA ION LE from Nvidia site. No luck installing, says can/t find hardware. Device Manager says I have a NVIDIA ION LE.

Not sure what to do next ???
    I am running Win 8 32 Bit.
Hardware ID of the ION LE:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&SUBSYS_3651103C&REV_B1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&SUBSYS_3651103C
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&CC_0300

So far nothing works, I tried the update procedure you suggested, message says I am using most current version of driver.
The NVIDIA win8 driver is one you have to run an installer for. I tried to find the file you suggested but nothing like it found.
I wish you could get on Team Viewer and look at the mini 311. I got some improvement by disabling the internet connection but not
much. I think there is a memory conflict somewhere. I can't even get on internet with an USB Adapter, the screen flickers so fast
you can't point or type. Also when I try to do a software shutdown the screen flashes and sort of says there is a memory error and can't terminate a program. Maybe I should go back to win 7, I am trying to learn Visual Studio 2012 and you have to have win 8 to use.

And I want to thank you for your suggestions, I owe you a cup of Java. Whoops I just got team viewer to work it you want to try
logining to my little mighty mini 311.

Well good for NVIDIA customer support found another driver to upgrade to. Worked like a charm.

Firstly, you could try posting the Hardware IDs for your current card.

Open Device Manager, select Display Adapters and list the name(s) of the card(s) there.

Next, double-click the ION LE (and any other) card, select the Details tab and then the Hardware Ids drop-down. Using CTRL+A and CTRL+C, copy and then paste (CTRL+V) the Hardware IDs shown there into a new message.

It is possible that the NVIDIA driver does not support the HP ION LE and/or that the driver requires additional components not included with the stock NVIDIA driver.

Also, is this running Windows 8 Release Preview 32-bit or 64-bit?

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_087F&CC_0300

From looking at the HP driver for Windows 7 32-bit (SP45291.exe), the hardware id that is supported is DEV_0876&SUBSYS_3651103C, which matches the NVIDIA driver.

The NVIDIA 306.97-notebook-win8-win7-winvista-32bit-international-whql.exe contains a file called ListDevices.txt in the Display.Driver folder - in there, it states that DEV_0876&SUBSYS_3651103C is supported by nvhm.inf (matches NVHM.inf from HP driver).

I would try extracting the NVIDIA driver to a folder, then updating from that folder via Windows 8 - Device Manager -> Display adapters - NVIDIA ION LE -> Driver tab -> Update Driver... -> Browse my computer [...]

Let us know if that works.

Edit: Okay, so therein lies the problem. Your hardware says DEV_087F, not DEV_0876. Which driver are you currently using?

Also, with 32-bit I have read that you can edit the *.INF file to match your Hardware ID (nvhm.inf in this case, and copy/paste/modify the DEV_0876 line into a new DEV_087F line in the [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTx86.6.2] section), then follow the Update Driver process above.

Same issue with my 311. Did all of the above and it did not work.

Then I tried "roll back" driver.

    Rebooted.

    Fixed

I want to share my experience. After installing Windows 8 over windows XP on a HP (Compaq) Mini 311c I had the same problems with the "flashing" screen. I downloaded the Gforce windows 8 pack from Nvidia for the ION LE. After unpacking, the driver started to install but hang up blocking the whole notebook. I managed to make a restore through the old F8 startup routine.

Then I removed all the drivers from nvidia through the controll panel and the flickering stopped (it turned back to standard VGA I assume)? But now the Gforce windows 8 pack from Nvidia couldn't recognise the hardware..... So I installed the windows 7 drivers and got the flicker back! Same attempt to install the Gforce pack and again it hang up.

Again I managed to make a restore through the old F8 startup routine and now got into save mode. Then I started the Gforce windows 8 pack and.... now it completed including audio drivers! After the first start again the system hung, but the restart went ok.

So in the end I have a stable windows 8 driver and video is playing ok. Also HDMI now works fine while before under XP I had problems (I always had to call the set-up routine). So I'm happy now. I don't know exactly what I did to fix it but I hope this is helpful. Just trial an error on removing drivers and use the safe mode of windows 8 (it is a bit hidden)

Only thing now: I have battery problems... It will not last for 15 minutes. Does Win8 use more resources?

Compared to XP, yes it does.
But maybe changing the power plan might improve battery performance.

There was a HP recommended power plan initially but don't know where to get it specifically.
The drivers and support page is this:
Compaq Mini 311c-1100 PC series*-* Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center
but you'll ned to be specific providing the exact model.

Thanks for sharing the trial and error procedure. This will probably encourage others to take the big leap.

Agreed, battery life affected. Less than 2 hours on a full charge.
