There will be RT and full windows models

I've had my ipad3 16g since launch day and it is nowhere near full.

Come on now you're suposed to turn it on. Seriously, I cant remember what it had to spare when new, but I'm sure it was around 12 to 13g full. I put a few hundred photos about 10 Albums and about 20 Apps on it and it was over 16 gigabyte. So you can forget about those 400,000 apps.

Although I'm not a huge Windows 8 fan at present, with some heavy modifications it is acceptable I suppose for a desktop which I'm using at the moment. But this tablet could make me a huge fan. I have an iPad 2 at the moment and love it but would much rather stick with Microsoft. I hope this gets off the ground.

Why would anybody need 400,000 apps, I dont see the need to keep music on mine either.

To be honest thats what about 90% of users use them for media consumption, so music, videos, photos and then Facebook, twitter, email etc. Thats the number one reason Apple has got itunes so tightly integrated, making money off media.
I know you dont need 400,000 apps, but thats what the Fanboys keep saying thats why they buy the things.

To be perfectly honest though, you really do need 32g on the new iPad, 16g is fine on the iPad2.

I have the iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G 64gb and am not a great collector of music but do have several movies stored and it has only 15gb free, so I know what you mean. 16g would be fine in an Enterprise environment where they are used for basic demo purposes or tasks - or as a user manual as several up-scale car makers are doing.

I am still waiting for a 7" model that would be much easier to haul around. I do not think that I would do any serious work on it, but for entertainement on the go it would be a nice toy. The price will determine whether I will plunge into that world.

I've never been a big fan of Microsoft branded products, but I think I could buy into one of those if the price was right.
Storage space for my tunes is right up there on my list. I've got two desktops and a laptop to do real work on, a tablet or slate for me would for chilling out time. Don't get me wrong, the more it can do compared to my desktop PC the better, but I don't plan on doing any spread sheets or writing a novel. If I had to I could probably make do with Windows RT. I'd rather have the 8 Pro version, but if it meant the difference between having and not having I might opt for the RT. It will be interesting to see what other tablets or slates show up from other manufacturers.

I could never use such a small screen for 'serious work' but it is useful, particularly when travelling, to read ones email, and it can also be used as a phone with almost any VOIP client and a headphone. On a long flight for instance, one has it as an alternative source of movies and music.
I've read on other forums how people are using them to control their digital media collections/appliances quite effectively, so they have lots of uses.
I also have an old Dell Netbook but far prefer to use the iPad as the screen is so much more easy on the eyes and the unit is so much faster.
It will be interesting to see how fast this new tablet will be using a regular OS.

I have both an iPad and Android tablet, I can control XBMC on my PC which is wirelessly connected to a NAS in my bedroom, which contains a very large library of movies, music and videos. Tablets really are the future, the huge number of Apps is amazing.
You say you can't do serious work on such a small screen but I'm sure you can, you certainly wouldn't be doing it all day, but for catching up tasks like checking a presentation or spreadsheet or any number of other things can be done.

It should be pretty fast. The RT model seems to have the fast Tegra3 and the Pro model has the i5 which I have in a laptop where it does very well. I would be more worried about the battery life of the pro model even with the slightly bigger battery than the RT model.

This article explains it pretty good : Microsoft 'own worst enemy' in bold tablet move, says analyst - Computerworld

So yes their will be a x86 surface tablet, basically running the intel I5 ivy bridge and traditional software, that to me is the way to go unless somebody can explain to me way a RT tablet would be better, remember I am an old desktop kind of guy :)

Ah, now that's where Metro belongs! That's where it makes sense!

And that is a nice looking tablet...

Do want to see the complete spec list. They should include home and office student on the pro version too... It'll probably cost more already, the word "pro" doesn't necessarily mean "Enterprise only where they will install their own licensed office" but I'm sure that;s what they are thinking. RT for students, Pro for businesses. Kind of simple minded.

I think I'd rather go with a convertible ultra book like the Yoga.

The really eye catching aesthetic of the Surface tablet is that with the cover on it looks like an impossibly small notebook. But I use my 10" touch screen pc mostly on my lap, or in bed -- how's the kickstand supposed to work there? The neat magnetic cover certainly won't hold it up.

The one thing I will say about the magnetic cover is that it forestalls a potentially serious problem of expectations on the windows 8 machine: You can't accurately use touch on a 10 inch screen in desktop mode. You couldn't do it in windows 7 and that's why 7 tablets failed, and you still can't do it in 8. You need to be able to mouse to, say, drag and drop multiple icons, or click the tiny little maximize, minimize, and close buttons in the upper right corner of the screen.

I think this is a beautiful machine, with (for once!) design elements to rival what Apple does every six months. And it's great that in limited circumstances -- like when you have a flat surface available to open the keyboard on -- you can use it as a productivity machine. And of course, thanks to the IPad, no one really expects a tablet to be all that productive anyway. So I agree that it will be a persuasive competitor to the ipad. And I can't wait to see it in person.

There are two versions, one with an ARM processor and Windows RT, and one with an Intel x86 processor and Windows 8 Pro.
You can't replace RT with 8 Pro. 8 Pro won't install on a device with an ARM processor.
