What would you like to see in Windows 8?

Want:
* Integrated RAR support
* No "installing updates" on either bootup or bootdown
* Most 7 taskbar features incl. Aero, Auto Peak
* Vista's "switch between windows" feature
* A built-in bootloader that will support Unix/Linux, Apple
* Ability to boot into DOS (***NOT COMMAND PROMPT*** before Windows starts, without the need of an OS disc that is not Safe Mode etc) Remembering doing this in Windows 95.
* XP's ability to completely wipeout (format) a disc before installing a new OS. 7 apparently doesn't (based on experience with clean installs failing unless I manually format a disc first)
* Reduced cost when buying 2nd or more keys (licenses)
* Support for OSX file systems

Do Not Want:
* Exclusive x64
* Integrated AV (needs to be removable)

Hello, to start off “Please Pardon the Rant” I have been using windows since ver. 3.1, I am a professional land surveyor and extremely anal when it comes to the organization of my data, I do and always will perform this task myself, I quit using the “My” system years ago, I do however prefer a single pane file pane like “My Computer”, I have placed all of my data on NAS Servers, the only thing on my C: Drive is the OS and the programs, I have a D: Data, M: Music, P: Pictures, V: Video etc., I have at my disposal 11 PCs, 10 of which are running XP Pro, 1 is W 7.
Although I am always excited about new technology I did not upgrade to Vista – mainly because of software incompatibility that occurred in my profession, I did however decide to try Windows 7, for the most part I am impressed, except for one area which if continues I will probably switch to another OS, this is the new” Libraries” function, I gave it a chance as I was advised on the windows 7 forums and I am sorry to say it has absolutely no value to me, and in fact it is encumbering to my work and play flow.
It appears that the common concept is that I do not remember where I placed my files so the PC has to find them for me, I did not lose anything, I know right where I placed it 99% of the time, I have been told that I should give them a chance, after I have used them for a while I will not be able to live without them, sorry after six months I still feel the same, it involves an additional unnecessary step that I can live without (and be more efficient without).
I have also been told that if I do not like them – don’t use them, unfortunately they are still there engrained in several of the functions, I will always place my files in the locations that I chose – not what the libraries recommends, I will always chose where the download is to be sent to (which is not always the same place), and I will always file my data According to the way I think - not because the industry believes that I do not have the ability to do so or need “Special Guidance” even a simple task such as save or save as should not involve a selection of predetermined locations – it should merely be a portal to the available drives – not folders, I will make that determination myself.
It was my hope that a update patch would become available to add an on-off switch to the libraries function, if you were able to implement this feature it would improve the system for experienced power users, at the same time you could monitor the number of downloads and this would give you an idea on the number of individuals that dislike the function itself.
So in summation I would like to see the ability to turn off the “Libraries” function in favor of a power user system that assumes I have access to a vast network and will make all of the decisions myself.

@Mitsubishiman

All that sounds fine in a business environment but what about the lone home computer user, they certainly wont have access to a vast network or several computers for their use ?

We'll pardon the rant :D

Why don't you put the Libraries to use in the vast network. It is one of the best features they have invented in a long time.

I don't know if you saw these at Seven Forums and this thread is "what would you like to see in windows 8" but

Here's a couple tutorials you should look at,

I would like to see ambidextrous mouse input with 4 finger click control. Palm pattern ball cursor control. How else are you going to fly a space ship? OR ---- just multi task.

My Computer

I would like to see a built-in file and folder locking feature. I'm not talking drive encryption like BitLocker.

The idea would be to go to the file properties, go to the security tab, and click "Password Protect". Then, no matter what your credentials were, it would prompt you to enter the password.
I'd like to see this too, but there are quite a few users who forget their passwords!

Then they will call their pc tech support n people like me who works for tech support will be in danger. ;)

I want Windows 8 to have a simplified file sharing system that you configure during installation.

So you can create a Workgroup/Homegroup during setup, decide whether or not to password protect it etc.

Opposed to have to fiddle with settings in control panel after installation.

And the other thing would like is a "printers near me" feature like you have on a Mac so if you're in a new location and are on WiFi you can set up a network printer with minimum hassle.

Oli

I can only dream. I've been wanting this forever! Messed around a bit with Linux, but too much into gaming and media things. I would pay up to $500 for Windows 8 if they would so something like that, especially wobbly windows, but it seems like it would have to be a complete overhaul and its not practical.

This is already in place thanks to Macrium!!! I love you!!! I don't have a fancy computer and I just did a backup of my OS. which was 15GB worth and it completed in under 4 minutes too, not a SSD just a SATA WD 400GB disk, I love you Macrium and thanks WHS for getting me on board over on Windows 7 Forums.

I would like to see an improvement on the Windows 7 Taskbar.

I would like to open any application, change the default settings to the settings I want it to have every time I open it, and right-click the Taskbar button to pin it to the Taskbar.

For example, I would always like to open Windows Wordpad in the "Text Document" mode without manually making changes to the Windows Registry.

This would save us all a lot of time everyday that would be better spent doing other things. This would also save non-technical people from making changes to the registry and take a chance on causing problems with their computer.

I really hope that someone at Microsoft reads this thread.

1. Dual-Pane, Tabbed File Manager.
2. Dual-Pane, Tabbed File Manager.
3. Dual-Pane, Tabbed File Manager!!!
4. Full compatibility with old programs and games. I want to play Loom, Monkey Island, Tex Murphy, Discworld without going through painful guides and tweaks from the web.
5. A Media Player that supports all audio and video containers and formats!
6. A built-in tool for fixing registry problems.
7. A built-in archiver that can at least open and extract all kinds of file compressions (Zip, Rar, Tar, ARJ etc.).
8. An extensive utilities packages like GNU/Linux has.

My Computer

I hope Microsoft stops developing browsers, there are enough browsers out there and everyone that Microsoft creates seems to have some more and more security problems. At work we have blocked all Internet Explorer browsers because of the amount of viruses and scripts it can run. Instead we use Firefox installed with No Script some people use Chrome as well. I think Microsoft makes a good os but they should focus on the OS part and not as much on the browsers. So IE9 is not needed Microsoft! Also they seem to break the web standard for web development everytime they release another release. Code a site with W3C Standards and load it in IE8. OMG it doesn't display properly. This has been the case and of course we need to add a if ie use ie.css what bullshit is that. Like serious for a software giant to do such a thing I dont get it. Plus IE effects the performance of their OS. If they stopped looking at IE I'm sure they could better the performance even more I know Explorer is used for most of the OS but please please please do NOT add that stupid blue E icon as some of our customers like to call it. Mozilla, Google and Apple have you beat microsoft.

Cheers,
