password reset fail

Hello to the forum from a "tenforums" user.
I have been asked to attempt a repair on a Win 8 laptop that is refusing to accept a recently modified password done one the MS account from another machine.
I can get into the bios and can see all fields but the machine simply refuses to accept the revised (and original) passwords.
There are two users shown on the lockscreen and neither allow the passwords.
There is no option to switch user from the lockscreen other than by picture (I am used to the "other user" version on W10p).

My current view is that with something this old and out-of-date it is better to just remove the hard drive and get at the files wanted.
As you may guess ... there are no file backups ! So it is those that prevent me from trying a re-install/upgrade etc.
Do any of the wizards here know of a sensible option other than that ?

If you are just concerned with retrieving the files, then there's no need to remove the hard drive. Use Option Two to enable the Administrator account then sign in and use that to get the files.

OPTION TWO

To Enable or Disable Built-in Administrator in Command Prompt at Boot
NOTE:
This option is great for when you are unable to sign in to Windows 8.

Thank you "Bree"
More issues .... but one was keyboard shift key ... which has let me get into one account with an old password.
So all files pulled of and now attempting an upgrade to w10.
Machine is very poor and I anticipate failure so will only go once then abandon...not enough time today.
Help appreciated and will note for the future.
Over and out

Glad to see you got the files off successfully.

If the upgrade to W10 fails, then you could capture the activation status of the curent W8 and use it to activate a clean install of W10.

Thanks Bree.
Upgrade successful without errors.
Now having password issues (no backups, changed email addresses, no old email access ....) ho hum.
But at least the machine is working and allowing old password despite MS password changes being accepted.
Stopping this now to return to the real world.
