Will Windows 10 be forced even if I didn't reserve?

Pretty much the title. From what I've heard and read, Windows 10 just isn't for me. However I'm building a computer in September, which is going to be running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. However I'm concerned after hearing about one guy, who didn't even reserve Windows 10, having Windows 10 be downloaded by his OS against his permission.

Is there any way to just... prevent that from happening? Any updates I need to avoid? Is it as simple as just hiding KB3035583 when I check for updates after installing the April 2014 rollup after the initial round of Windows Updates?

the only way I was able to prevent the forced upgrade was to
stop the GWX.exe service in task manager and rename the windows\system32\GWX folder and windows\syswow64\GWX folder

I seriously doubt that.
Would hope so, it was just the way they said it, about how he was forced to do something to stop it.
:/

Still... I hope I don't have Windows 8.1 downloading Windows 10 on me if I download all the updates except the GWX one. That's not going to be fun considering Australian internet. :x

It's not being forced on anyone. If you don't reserve it there is no reason it should even start to download.

:/ Wow. Given how it's a 3GB freaking download, I don't think I should have to put up with that crap. Wait... you installed the update that added the GWX task? Why don't you just... uninstall it?

I've done a Desktop over Win7 w/SP1, a Notebook over Win8.1 and a Tablet over Win8.1, none had Win10 'forced' on them, had to start the ball myself. Worked out good, only needed a Bluetooth driver for the Notebook and Dell was prepared.

There would need to be more than one unconfirmed incident to claim they are forcing anything.

Ok I have an HP 15 laptop new out of the box with Win 8.1 installed. As soon as I run Windows Updates it tries to download Windows 10. Even after I unticked the Optional updates for Windows 10. Do I have to hobble GWX to stop it trying to download Win 10 - I'm only on standard adsl 6Mbps

Probably. The 6Mbps shouldn't be an issue, I have only a 1Mbps Wireless DSL, just takes longer. The bigger issue is whether you have a Metered service, may have to get your ISP to change that for a couple of days or at least until it installs. As far as I know the only way to get the Free Upgrade is while booted into Win7 w/SP1 or Win8.1 which means the download. With the Win10TP I was able to locate the install.esd file, create the .iso from that, burn to DVD then installed on a Notebook but I did it over a much earlier Build, don't know if that can be done with the Release version of Win10.

There are three methods:

Windows Update - a lot of failures reported
or
Windows 10 Create Media Tool > Windows 10
or
Windows 10 ISO Download > Tech Bench

Yes, I can confirm that I had Win 10 downloaded on one of my Win 8.1 machines without my consent (and I had deleted the GWX folder in Windows\System32 folder). However, install wasn't forced.
