old games are very slow

avada - If I'm not mistaken I think the aiming issue in GTA3/VC is a problem within the game it's self at higher resolutions. I've found running it in a 4:3 resolution solves the issue. I think there are POV mods to solve it.

Now that you mention it there was the issue that the aim wasn't where the crosshair was. But there was also the issue with mouse movements too.

Has anyone tried DirectDraw gaming in Windows 10 Build 10158/10159? I can't seem to get the update here, looks like it's only for the en-us version.

I tried some DirectDraw games on build 10162, GTA III & Midtown Madness 2 and they wouldn't even launch. There were some leaked release notes for 10163 which state that an issue with full screen Direct3D 8 games not launching has been resolved so it looks like it could be a work in progress.

Build 10166 has just been released so the issue should be resolved and the games should be running at full speed if they have indeed solved these issues. I don't have the preview installed on hardware at the moment so I can't test but if any of you do on the fast ring it's definitely worth trying some of the old games.

I wonder if this means they'll fix directdraw games.

A lot of people on GOG.com don't even seem to realise that there's an issue running these games on Windows 8, probably because they haven't played them in years and don't realise they're running much slower than they should be.

DirectDraw≠Direct3D. The two games can't be directdraw becuase they're 3D.
But it didn't such as much on win8... Vice City for example ran, but only at 30 fps and mouse movement issues.

Not realizing how slow DDraw games run would be hard because it ranges between excruciating and unplayable.

Yes, been confusing the two as it's problem which seems to affect anything DirectX8 or lower.

Good idea however this issue affects Windows 8 as well and they should really be backporting these fixes once they are complete as Windows 8 is in mainstream support.

Win10 will be practically an update/service-pack to 8 which will be abandoned shortly, won't it?

No the free offering is only for one year. The fact is, Windows 8 has a support schedule which they should be following and Windows 10 does not count as a service pack.

Also waiting on 10 for my laptop and pc. I share the optimism here that 10 will sort out some issues. But, to be fair, not had gaming issues with 8.1. (Freelancer modded), Silent Hunter 4, Far Cry 2, Doom 3, and dozens of puzzling games. no probs. Occasionally a crash with SH4, but nothing else.

I saw somewhere online that the release version of 10 is actually 10.3.1

Because it's a different forum? People check back here and have accounts here, but not necessarily there?

That's my point, they may have answers for you since it is 10 you are discussing. Just thought it might be more helpful. Why not open an account there?

Btw it is run my the same folks and many of the members here have also joined over there. With the release coming up I would think it would be the place to go for Ten(10) comments, questions and issues. Folks there have been testing it out since the first preview release.

Just got done testing the new build 10166. Nothing has changed at all and the problems remain. To the one user who said gta vice city is fixed,it is not fixed. It is still 30 fps.

Oh well. I guess we'll need keeping around an installed XP/7 copy to play old games.

Vice city runs decent even on a 462 computer and AGP video card. Must be something wrong with it or your setup. It doesn't even know about 2 or more cores, it's single threaded engine.

Irrelevant. You didn't pay attention to the thread. Part of the issue is that old dx games like that are capped at 30fps in fullscreen mode. The "must be wrong with your setup" part is Windows 8.x.

It isn't my setup. Try it yourself, get Fraps or a framerate program and then run the game. It will say 30 fps when you are in the game. They might still be working on it so lets wait and see. They already know and said they are aware of the issue.
